Nuclear power developer Sizewell C has appointed William Hare Group to deliver the structural steelwork package for a new amenity building on its accommodation campus in Suffolk.
The Lancashire-based steel contractor will fabricate and erect a two-storey steel frame structure, drawing on its nuclear sector experience, including ongoing work at Hinkley Point C where it has been present since 2019.
Sizewell C valued the steel frame contract at between £30m and £40m in a May notice.
More than 500 tonnes of steel will be manufactured using robotic processes at William Hare’s Scarborough plant in North Yorkshire, the client said.
Fabrication is due to begin in October, with onsite work expected to start before the end of 2025.
McLaren was appointed in May to build the 2,400-bed campus for Sizewell C site workers.
The £20bn, 3.2GW Sizewell C nuclear power station is under development on the Suffolk coast.
The amenity building will serve Sizewell C’s temporary accommodation campus near Leiston, which is currently under construction. It is intended to support the project’s non-local workforce.
The contract supports Sizewell C’s pledge to award 70 per cent of construction value to UK businesses.
Sizewell C joint managing director Nigel Cann said awarding the contract to a UK steelwork supplier was part of its strategy to back domestic manufacturing.
Cann said: “We are committed to supporting the UK steel industry as we build Sizewell C. This investment will support thousands of jobs and create a skills legacy for decades to come.”
