Met all the criterias for doing inline exams from out centre. Sound and secure and in an honest way. 3 years ago, the board decided otherwise and allowed exams to be conducted in candidates home. Where is the logic? Such exams are a matter of life and death on sites. Let the educatiinalist di these exams in every town or city. We have the knowledge to conduct external exams fairly and securely.

Comment on Why do we lock young people out of trades? by bron claridge https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/sections/long-reads/opinion/why-do-we-lock-young-people-out-of-trades-25-11-2025/#comment-2087 Tue, 02 Dec 2025 06:07:33 +0000 https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/?p=532821#comment-2087 Are there practical ways now the industry can help by standardising safe pathways so employers feel confident in taking on 16‑ and 17‑year‑olds? Currently, there is a de facto exclusion at a critical time when young people need to be given every opportunity.

Comment on Budget 2025: Fears apprenticeship changes could lower standards by Iain McIlwee https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/skills/budget-2025-fears-apprenticeship-changes-could-lower-standards-26-11-2025/#comment-2086 Wed, 26 Nov 2025 18:44:35 +0000 https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/?p=533494#comment-2086 Fully support what Nicola is saying here. If you do the maths for a Dry Lining apprenticeship, the Minimum Wage increase adds (when you factor in taxes) over £1,000. The saving in training is in theory £700, but the truth is that most people don’t have to pay this as we can normally find top-up through vouchers. So at best it is only £200 more for an apprentice, but in reality it is an extra grand on the apprentice butchers bill that will further discourage employers. Complete own goal.

DUE DILIGENCE
All of our contractors are subject to due diligence via our
onboarding process which ensures that our suppliers and
sub-contractors have an awareness of our modern slavery
commitments, along with our expectations.
The onboarding process involves a face-to-face meeting between
our site teams, commercial teams and the relevant contractor to
discuss contract orders and Vistry Group policies, and how they
are best implemented. If any concerns are raised, then further
clarification may be sought. We require our Group suppliers to
confirm their understanding of our Modern Slavey policy and
provide copies of their own modern slavery policies.
We meet regularly with our suppliers to review their
performance and, if necessary, raise matters of concern

Comment on Trade group chiefs urge PM to ‘suspend’ apprenticeship reforms by denise@denbre.com https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/government/trade-group-chiefs-urge-pm-to-suspend-apprenticeship-reforms-22-10-2025/#comment-2079 Wed, 22 Oct 2025 13:09:22 +0000 https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/?p=531322#comment-2079 I entirely agree with the concerns raised.

However, when I attended a seminar on the subject and questioned this 8-month apprenticeship proposal, stating that no one would want their electrical work done by someone with only 8 months experience under their belt, the response was that of course the duration of the apprenticeship would depend on the trade being undertaken.
It did sound to me like the 8-month apprenticeship being touted was for headline grabbing only.

Also, it is a bit much to accuse the government of prioritising cutting costs over skills, when the major firms in the industry itself, did the same thing. They abandoned hiring apprentices in favour of sub-contracting out, followed by the sub-contractors, themselves, using only self-employed people. There is no room for employing apprentices here.

Once again, I say, there is plenty for training providers to do when it comes to providing the foundational diplomas, but there is nowhere to go to when seeking an apprenticeship afterwards, the bit that provides the much-needed experience needed to qualify.
