Tier one contractor Bowmer & Kirkland has secured a £49.8m job to deliver the main works for a secondary school redevelopment in Cramlington, Northumberland.

The job was awarded through a call-off under the Department for Education’s (DfE’s) CF21 school construction framework.

The project will see the replacement of existing facilities at Cramlington Learning Village, the DfE said in a 22 August notice.

Construction work began on 11 August and is due to complete by 27 November 2028.

The works will be delivered in five phases. A new school building will be constructed while the current blocks remain in use, before being demolished in 2027. This approach is intended to minimise disruption to staff and students.

The new building will also accommodate the school’s sixth form, the Advanced Learning Village, with an Independent Learning Centre located on the ground floor.

Procurement was handled by the DfE, which is also acting as client on the scheme. The architect has not been named in procurement documents.

The CF21 framework route used for the contract allows the DfE to procure from a list of pre-approved firms without a full competitive tender process.
