Turnover at VolkerWessels UK has risen by over \u00a3113m in a year, with a profit of almost \u00a329m in its accounts for the year ending 31 December 2018.<\/p>\n

The firm reported a revenue of \u00a3984m, compared to \u00a3870.4m in its accounts for 2017, and a pre-tax margin of 3 per cent.<\/p>\n

According to the contractor, its successful year is due in part to the fact that its secured order book is at a \u201chistoric high\u201d of \u00a31.4bn and the increase in revenue \u201creflects the increased volumes delivered across all our business units\u201d.<\/p>\n

Several projects were credited for \u201cstrengthening its market position\u201d such as lot two on Highways England\u2019s Delivery Integration Partnership Framework, the M5 Oldbury Viaduct and the North West Electrification Programme.<\/p>\n

Although it performed well, the contractor said that operating in difficult market conditions was a challenge and described the uncertainty of Brexit as an \u201ceconomic headwind\u201d.<\/p>\n

It said: \u201cIn the year to 31 December 2018, our revenue increased by 13.1 per cent to \u00a3984m despite challenging market conditions, including the uncertainty arising from the ongoing Brexit process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe increase reflects higher volumes across all segments which confirms that our efforts to exceed stakeholders\u2019 expectations and meet demands of the market are paying off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The contractor also addressed difficult market conditions in the wake of Carillion\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n

It said: \u201cWhile these issues have had limited impact on our business, they have quite rightly prompted stakeholders to review industry practices and the adequacy of related regulation, a process which has had implications for all players in the sector, particularly those that contract with public bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, the firm admitted that its water, energy and marine industry arm VolkerStevin faced cost increases<\/a> after being hit by issues with a subcontractor on a \u00a343m wastewater treatment project at Oswestry.<\/p>\n

Provisions were not made for the job last year as the company said it was looking to reclaim additional cost.<\/p>\n

It had previously promised to address the financial impact of the Oswestry project in its accounts this year. However the document released today said only: \u201cWe have experienced some challenges on completing the Oswestry Waste Water Treatment Upgrade during the year. This does not have an impact on our plan to continue development in the water sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the contractor said it has an \u201cexceptionally strong pipeline of quality work\u201d in its order book and that it will continue to \u201cfocus on profit rather than volume\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
