Across the country, a number of other healthcare facilities are moving towards completion, some within the next few months, some further into the future \u2013 and some that should already have opened.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. The Grange University Hospital<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/emedia1.nhs.wales\/ABUhb\/cache\/file\/6D2835E3-861C-4923-B0EF7CEF9E9C18D8_carouselimage.jpg\" width=\"722\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a3230m<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: spring 2021 (partial and temporary opening: April 2020)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end of March, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board announced sections of the hospital, located near Newport in South Wales, would open almost a year early in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The board plans to have 350 of the hospital\u2019s 471-beds operational by the end of April with work currently underway onsite to meet the earlier deadline. The Welsh Government has provided \u00a310m to speed up construction.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital, which will fully open early next year, will include a 24-hour acute assessment and emergency department, as well as a helipad. Last year <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/laing-orourke-delivers-factory-made-hospital-in-wales-20-02-2019\/\">Construction News <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/laing-orourke-delivers-factory-made-hospital-in-wales-20-02-2019\/\">visited the site<\/a>\u00a0to see how the team was planning to deliver 70 per cent of the works using offsite methods.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Royal Hospital for Children and Young People<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-356444\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/Edinburgh-Royal-Hospital-for-Sick-Children-Brookfield-Multiplex_660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/Edinburgh-Royal-Hospital-for-Sick-Children-Brookfield-Multiplex_660.jpg 660w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/Edinburgh-Royal-Hospital-for-Sick-Children-Brookfield-Multiplex_660-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/Edinburgh-Royal-Hospital-for-Sick-Children-Brookfield-Multiplex_660-440x330.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Integrated Health Solutions Lothian \u2013 a consortium including Multiplex, HLM Architects, financing group Macquarie Capital and Bouygues Energies &amp; Services<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a3230m (not including remediation costs)<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Edinburgh children\u2019s hospital was originally slated for a 2017 opening, but the building failed to comply with ventilation standards. In February, electrical contractor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/news\/contractors-news\/imtech-wins-me-job-on-troubled-edinburgh-hospital-17-02-2020\/\">Imtech was appointed to take over the M&amp;E works<\/a>. Last year, Scottish health secretary Jeane Freeman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/high-court-judge-lead-inquiry-multiplex-hospitals-29-11-2019\/\">announced a review of issues including safety and standards, following concerns raised about the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A NHS Lothian spokesman told <em>Construction News<\/em> the impact of the virus has not changed the hospital\u2019s construction schedule and it is currently aiming to open in May, with a decision on the date expected to be made in April.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Then, after completing remedial works to the facility,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/balfour-beatty\/balfour-beatty-begins-works-267m-midland-met-12-12-2019\/\">Balfour Beatty was confirmed as the project\u2019s new contractor last year<\/a>. In October, an additional \u00a3350m of funding was allocated to the project.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the National Audit Office released a report into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/carillion\/carillion-shareholders-and-investors-took-biggest-hit-on-hospitals-says-auditor-17-01-2020\/\">Carillion hospitals<\/a> revealing that the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust negotiated a \u2018target price\u2019 for work by Balfour Beatty, meaning that prices should not increase unless the trust changes the scope of the project or more problems with Carillion\u2019s work emerge.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Royal Liverpool University Hospital<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-390904\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/06\/Laing_Royal-Liverpool_13-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/06\/Laing_Royal-Liverpool_13-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/06\/Laing_Royal-Liverpool_13-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Laing O\u2019Rourke (formerly Carillion)<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a3335m (Carillion contract value)<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: 2022* (five years late)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">The hospital was said to be 90 per cent complete in 2017 but Laing O\u2019Rourke has been remediating a series of major defects identified after Carillion\u2019s collapse in 2018. In December 2019, the opening date was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/laing-orourke\/royal-liverpool-delayed-until-2022-19-12-2019\/\">pushed back to 2022<\/a>, five years later than the original opening date. It was also revealed that an additional \u00a3300m was needed to complete the project.<\/p>\n<p>Last week it was reported that Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to decide on whether to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/carillion\/liverpool-hospital-trust-reveals-subjects-of-potential-legal-action-30-03-2020\/\">issue legal claims<\/a> against Carillion\u2019s insurers and subcontractor Heyrod. Last year,\u00a0<em>Construction News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/project-reports\/royal-liverpool-hospital-gets-remedial-surgery-26-06-2019\/\">visited the hospital in the midst of extensive remediation works,<\/a>\u00a0which included moving pipework to allow changes to the building&#8217;s structure while heating, water and electricity systems were kept running.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Proton-beam therapy unit at University College London Hospital<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-347637\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/09\/Bouygues-UCLH-proton-beam-therapy-facility-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Bouygues UCLH proton beam therapy facility 1\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/09\/Bouygues-UCLH-proton-beam-therapy-facility-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/09\/Bouygues-UCLH-proton-beam-therapy-facility-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Bouygues UK<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a3228m<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: autumn 2020*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>University College London Hospital\u2019s (UCLH) 11-storey cancer and surgical-care facility is due to open later this year. A key feature of the unit is the inclusion of a proton-beam therapy centre (the beams are used to attack cells during cancer treatment, minimising damage to surrounding cells).<\/p>\n<p>Once complete, the building will include 107 beds, as well as eight operating theatres. In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/bouygues\/bouygues-digs-mega-basement-for-300m-uclh-proton-beam-cancer-centre-08-11-2017\/\"><em>CN<\/em> visited the project<\/a>, for which the team completed a two-year, 28.5-metre excavation of a five-storey basement before constructing the centre.<\/p>\n<p>A UCLH spokeswoman says:\u00a0\u201cConstruction is ongoing at our new 11-storey\u00a0hospital. Our contractor Bouygues UK is following the\u00a0Public Health England\u00a0and\u00a0Construction Leadership Council guidelines to ensure the safety of staff and the public. Our aim is\u00a0to open the hospital as soon as possible, providing additional capacity to the NHS at this exceptional time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital ward extension<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_411340\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 1034px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-411340 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/02\/Norfolk_MTX_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/02\/Norfolk_MTX_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/02\/Norfolk_MTX_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/02\/Norfolk_MTX_1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/02\/Norfolk_MTX_1-230x153.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: BlueSky UAV Specialists<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: MTX<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a310m<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: April 2020*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first phase of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital&#8217;s (NNUH) extension is expected to complete later this month. The three-storey building will include a 32-bed acute unit and a 33-bed stroke unit. An additional floor of the extension will receive a fit-out worth up to \u00a34m once NNUH decides on the floor&#8217;s use.<\/p>\n<p>In February,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/project-reports\/how-to-compress-a-three-year-project-into-one-19-02-2020\/\"><em>CN<\/em> visited the site<\/a> where contractors are striving to complete the expansion in just seven months using bespoke modular construction.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. Southampton General Hospital intensive-care unit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bam.com\/sites\/default\/files\/domain-606\/news\/2019-08-19-soton-uh-p22-606-156619352766497860.jpg\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Bam Construction<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a322m<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: intensive-care unit to open in September; overall completion in spring 2021*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bam Construction is in the midst of expanding the hospital\u2019s intensive-care unit and creating a new outpatient facility on the north side of the hospital\u2019s existing site. The contractor\u2019s parent company, Royal Bam, had previously worked on the hospital\u2019s original buildings in 1973 when it operated as Higgs and Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Slated to be completed next spring, the project also includes works to plant equipment and the fit-out of the extended sections of the facility.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Once operational, it will treat up to 3,000 private patients each year. It replaces the existing Sancta Maria Hospital located in Uplands, west of Swansea city centre.<\/p>\n<p>The new facility will also include an MRI scanner, digital x-ray room, and a diagnostic ultrasound and cardiology suite.<\/p>\n<p>Healthcare Management Trust (HMT) chief executive Tony Barrett says: \u201cWe continue to work with our main contractor Kier and at this time I am pleased to confirm that the SA1 site remains open with works progressing, and it is indeed currently our intention for an autumn opening. Obviously given the current national emergency, HMT is very closely monitoring the situation with our project managers Gardiner &amp; Theobald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up to 80,000 private sector beds have been made available during the coronavirus outbreak to help alleviate pressure on the NHS, <em>CN<\/em>\u00a0sister title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursingtimes.net\/news\/coronavirus\/nhs-brokers-deal-with-private-hospitals-to-gain-10000-nurses-23-03-2020\/\"><em>Nursing Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has reported.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. Llandough Hospital spinal rehabilitation unit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-415284\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/04\/University-of-Llandough-Hospital_drone-shot-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/04\/University-of-Llandough-Hospital_drone-shot-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/04\/University-of-Llandough-Hospital_drone-shot-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/04\/University-of-Llandough-Hospital_drone-shot-230x153.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Willmott Dixon<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a315.5m<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: late 2020*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Set to be completed by Willmott Dixon at the end of this year is a new spinal rehabilitation unit at Llandough Hospital in Cardiff. When finished, it will include a 26-bed spinal-cord injury rehabilitation ward, a 24-bed specialist neuro-rehabilitation ward, a critical care service, a purpose-built hydrotherapy unit and independent living facilities.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, Willmott Dixon is also extending and refurbishing existing sections of the hospital.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. Heatherwood Hospital<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-381005\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/Heatherwood_health_hospital_Kier-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"heatherwood health hospital kier\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/Heatherwood_health_hospital_Kier-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/02\/Heatherwood_health_hospital_Kier-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contractor: Kier<\/li>\n<li>Construction cost: \u00a398m<\/li>\n<li>Completion date: 2021*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In January last year, Kier was appointed to build a new hospital on the site of Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot, Berkshire. The 11,500-square metre site will include six operating theatres and 48 inpatient beds.
