The industry as a whole could claim a total of \u00a3752m from the bonus scheme if every employee placed on the Coronavirus Jobs Retention Scheme was brought back to work, however five of the top 20 firms by turnover have now indicated they will not claim the money.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Robert McAlpine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/multiplex\/multiplex-hospital-design-not-linked-to-deaths-15-06-2020\/\">announced in April<\/a> that around 50 per cent of its 2,045 staff would be furloughed, meaning it could make around \u00a31m through the scheme. Last week the contractor announced it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/sir-robert-mcalpine\/sir-robert-mcalpine-to-cut-132-jobs-in-restructure-31-07-2020\/\">making 132 people redundant<\/a> as part of a restructure to help it deal with the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman told <em>Construction News<\/em> the company \u201cwill not be claiming this bonus from government\u201d but declined to comment further on the decision.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Multiplex said the contractor, the UK\u2019s 14<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">th<\/span>\u00a0largest by turnover, \u201cwon\u2019t be participating in the government furlough bonus scheme\u201d, though did not respond to a question about the reasons behind this. The firm has not yet publicly revealed how many employees it plans to make redundant after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/multiplex\/multiplex-hospital-design-not-linked-to-deaths-15-06-2020\/\">announcing a reduction of staff in June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The firms follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/laing-orourke\/laing-orourke-wont-claim-from-furlough-bonus-scheme-15-07-2020\/\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/kier-wont-claim-from-furlough-bonus-scheme-16-07-2020\/\">Kier<\/a>, who both ruled out claiming the cash last month.<\/p>\n<p>Costain placed 350 workers on furlough during the crisis so would be able to claim \u00a3350,000 if they are all retained. However a spokeswoman said it is not the firm\u2019s intention to use the money.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cCostain used the\u00a0government\u2019s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to safeguard some 350 jobs. The majority of colleagues on furlough leave have now returned or are due to return shortly so it is not our current intention to use the \u00a31,000 bonus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/job-retention-bonus\/job-retention-bonus\">Further details about the furlough bonus scheme<\/a> released by the Treasury on Friday revealed that the money can be claimed for all employees including company directors and agency workers, including those employed by umbrella companies. They need to have been continuously employed to the end of January 2021 and have been paid an average of at least \u00a3520 a month.<\/p>\n<p>The bonus will be taxable.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for Bouygues UK, VolkerWessels UK, Vinci UK, Bam Construct, Willmott Dixon, Wates all told <em>CN<\/em> last week that their position on claiming the bonus was either under review or a decision would be taken at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Employers will be able to claim through the scheme on the government\u2019s website from February next year, with more guidance due to be published by the end of September.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sir Robert McAlpine and Multiplex are the latest contractors to rule out claiming through the Jobs Retention Bonus scheme.
