{"id":449462,"date":"2021-12-09T11:58:01","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T11:58:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=449462"},"modified":"2021-12-09T11:58:01","modified_gmt":"2021-12-09T11:58:01","slug":"galliford-and-volkerwessels-join-clc-net-zero-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sustainability\/galliford-and-volkerwessels-join-clc-net-zero-programme-09-12-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Galliford and VolkerWessels join CLC net-zero programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another 11 firms, including Galliford Try and VolkerWessels, have joined the Construction Leadership Council\u2019s (CLC) carbon reduction programme.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in March this year, the CO<sub>2<\/sub>nstructZero industry change programme brings together firms to act as \u201cbusiness champions\u201d for carbon reduction in the construction sector.<\/p>\n<p>The 11 new firms to sign up include Osborne, Henry Brothers, AESG, Benfield Timber Buildings and Zed Pods. The Environment Agency has also signed up, becoming the first client organisation to join the programme.<\/p>\n<p>Energy supplier EvoEnergy, tech firm Kerridge Commercial Systems and insulation manufacturer Xtratherm have also joined the programme, which now boasts more than 50 organisations. Accountancy firm PwC has joined the programme as a partner.<\/p>\n<p>Mace, Multiplex and Laing O&#8217;Rourke were among the major contractors that joined the initiative earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CLC, the programme brings together organisations that are demonstrating leadership in relation to carbon reduction, sharing their good practice with others from across the UK construction sector, and providing a set of metrics that enables the sector, quarterly, to collectively measure its progress to net zero.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in <em>Construction News<\/em> in July, CLC co-chair Andy Mitchell said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sustainability\/assessing-our-industrys-fitness-for-the-fight-against-climate-change-20-07-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">industry couldn\u2019t fix \u201cwhat it can\u2019t measure\u201d,<\/a> noting that the construction industry had in the past only paid \u201clip service\u201d to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Agency programme manager and CO<sub>2<\/sub>nstructZero business leader Owen Tarrant said: \u201cWe\u2019ve set the goal of reaching net zero by 2030. Construction accounts for over half of our annual carbon emissions per year and we are already reducing this through nature-based solutions and new tools and technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur involvement with the CO<sub>2<\/sub>nstructZero initiative is a great opportunity to collaborate across the industry and share our progress to help facilitate the country\u2019s shift to low-carbon infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said: \u201cThe power of the CLC comes from its ability to reflect and engage with the whole industry.
