{"id":467977,"date":"2022-10-28T06:50:08","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T05:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=467977"},"modified":"2022-10-27T17:05:29","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T16:05:29","slug":"hs2-slashes-energy-costs-via-framework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/hs2-slashes-energy-costs-via-framework-28-10-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 slashes energy costs via framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HS2\u2019s decision to use a government electricity framework has cut the price it pays for energy by approximately 10 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The multimillion-pound high-speed rail project opted to use a government framework to buy in the electricity it needs to power machinery used on phase one of the build, which will run between London and Birmingham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of the Crown Commercial Services Framework has enabled it to bypass the soaring energy prices set by suppliers, which have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/supply-chain\/ukraine-steel-timber-and-brick-chiefs-issue-warning-11-03-2022\/\"> hit<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0contractors across the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the Russian invasion of Ukraine contributed to rocketing energy costs by pushing up gas prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HS2 estimated that using the framework resulted in it securing electricity at between 9 and 12 per cent below the open market price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a choice,\u201d HS2 civils directory director Mike Lyons told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe could have gone out to market, as other businesses do, or we could have used the government framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was the most cost-effective way for us to do it because we are buying so much electricity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electricity powers all five of HS2\u2019s tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) that are up and running, in addition to cranes and other machinery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the market being \u201cvolatile\u201d, Lyons explained that buying \u201csmartly\u201d via the government framework had kept electricity costs \u201cas efficient as possible\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He declined to state a figure of how much was saved by buying via the framework, saying it was too early to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyons was speaking to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as HS2 launched its fifth TBM, this time from its West Ruislip site in West London. A joint venture of Skanska, Costain and Strabag (SCS JV) is leading on that section of the route.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as Caroline, the 2,000-tonne machine will travel five miles to Greenford over a 22-month period. Sushila, which<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/hs2\/hs2-launches-first-giant-tbm-in-london-07-10-2022\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched earlier this month, is also at work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the same section of the tunnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many businesses in the construction industry have been<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/supply-chain\/ukraine-steel-timber-and-brick-chiefs-issue-warning-11-03-2022\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling to cope with a spike in electricity prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since war broke out in Ukraine in February. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we have seen energy prices go up, which has been a challenge for us, and is still a challenge in the wider industry, at HS2 we have tried to apply some of those efficiency statements all the time and they have helped us reduce costs,\u201d Lyons said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The electricity is provided by an electrical substation installed at the site, according to HS2 Ltd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TBM Caroline will install more than 4,200 tunnel segments on the route, 1,600 of which have already been manufactured. The machine measures 140 metres in length, and will be dismantled and extracted from a 40 metre-deep shaft once the route has been completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The TBM will remove about 2 million cubic metres of material, all of which, apart from a 1.5 metre-thick wall, will be reused on site, Lyons said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HS2 is due to launch two TBMs from Victoria Road to Greenpark Way in 2023, while a further two machines will bore a 4.5-mile tunnel from Old Oak Common and Euston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, 10 TBMs are working on phase one of HS2, the first of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/hs2\/hs2-reaches-major-milestone-as-tunnelling-begins-13-05-2021\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which, Florence, set off in May 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
