The cost of relocating the Museum of London has risen by \u00a3100m, it has emerged.<\/p>\n

The project involves moving the museum from its Barbican base to the nearby former Smithfield Market, where listed buildings are being refurbished.<\/p>\n

Sir Robert McAlpine was formally appointed construction manager on the scheme today (10 May). It will also act as principal contractor.<\/p>\n

The relocated facility \u2013 to be renamed the London Museum \u2013 was previously scheduled to open in 2026. But museum bosses recently told the Architects\u2019 Journal<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that it would not be fully open until 2028.<\/p>\n

This week a spokesperson for the museum said that the project cost, which had a budget of \u00a3337m in 2019, had now increased to \u00a3437m.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said: \u201cWe acknowledge that there will be additional costs to the project due to programme delays, inflation, and other factors that we have previously indicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

They added that work on site has shown the buildings were in a worse state of disrepair than first anticipated and that delays to negotiations between the City of London Corporation and the Smithfield Market Tenants\u2019 Association to gain possession of one of the vacant buildings will hold up the opening of that part of the site.<\/p>\n

The project is funded jointly by the museum itself, the City of London Corporation, the Greater London Authority and private donors. The spokesperson added that discussions are ongoing about the extra funding and added: “We have already raised a record amount for this project and, with [City of London and GLA] support, we are moving forwards with confidence.”<\/p>\n

When it was first announced in 2015, the new museum project was expected to cost \u00a3150m<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Recent internal works on the project saw the excavation of service trenches in former salt stores and vaults as well as the cleaning of 10,000 square metres of Victorian brickwork and restoring jack arches using only reclaimed 19th century bricks. Construction work has recently begun on the creation of a layered concrete staircase.<\/p>\n

Plans for the new London Museum include an opening festival curated by Londoners. The City of London Corporation said it hoped the facility will be visited by two million people a year, including every school child in London.<\/p>\n

Alec Shaw, director of new museum project and estate, said: \u201cThe new London Museum project is one of the most ambitious and complex cultural projects in Europe and one which will be the best city museum in the world once it is completed.”<\/p>\n

The City of London Corporation plans to reopen Smithfield Market, along with Billingsgate Fish Market and New Spitalfields flower and fruit-and-veg market, on a former power station site in Dagenham. However, concerns have been raised by Havering Council<\/a> over the potential impact on Romford Market, which is protected from competition by royal charter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
