Willmott Dixon has launched its first drylining academy for prisoners in the North of England.<\/p>\n

The Hertfordshire-based contractor will teach inmates at HMP Lincoln plasterboard installation skills to help them find jobs on their release.<\/p>\n

It follows similar initiatives at HMP Elmley in Kent, HMP Cardiff in South Wales<\/a> and HMP Belmarsh in London.<\/p>\n

Groups of up to eight people will attend the academy in Lincolnshire with the goal of obtaining Construction Skills Certification Scheme cards allowing them to work on site.<\/p>\n

Willmott Dixon director Nick Heath said the contractor \u201chas a purpose beyond profit\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat includes providing opportunities and driving social mobility in our communities,” he added. \u201cWith our presence in Lincolnshire growing, our newest academy will help people coming out of HMP Lincoln find long-term work and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heath said the construction industry faced a \u201cchronic skills shortage\u201d, adding: \u201cOur academy equips ex-offenders with skills to find a rewarding job when their sentence completes and boosts the local talent pool of skilled construction workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

One prisoner at HMP Lincoln said: \u201cThe programme has given me knowledge as to what I could do [when I’m released], and how it could lead to a job. It will help me to not go back to being the same person I was before. My favourite bit of the programme has been building something and looking back and knowing that you\u2019ve done it.\u201d<\/p>\n

HMP Lincoln governor Matt Spencer said the scheme was a \u201cgreat example of the quality vocational training HMP Lincoln wants to provide to its prisoners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this vocational training, HMP Lincoln prisoners have a much better chance of getting a job on release and this means they are much less likely to reoffend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Willmott Dixon has received donations of money, time and tools for the initiative from supply chain partners including Advante, British Gypsum, Elmsmere, Nuneaton Signs, We Are Social Enterprise and Lincsco.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
