Skanska has been named as the preferred bidder on a \u00a3450m roads contract for the Lower Thames Crossing megaproject.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the second of three major contracts to be awarded by National Highways for the planned road tunnel crossing the Thames Estuary between Kent and Essex.<\/span><\/p>\n

Covering almost four miles of new road and structures, Skanska\u2019s contract will deliver the southern part of the route connecting the A2\/M2 to the tunnel approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

In January, Balfour Beatty <\/span>won a \u00a31.2bn package<\/span><\/a> on the project to build roads on the north of the River Thames. A contract to build the tunnels and approaches is expected to be awarded later this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skanska beat competition from<\/span> three other bidders<\/span><\/a>: Costain; a joint venture between Kier and Eiffage; and a JV comprising Bam Nuttall, Ferrovial Construction and Vinci Construction Grands Projets.<\/span><\/p>\n

The contract will also include green bridges for wildlife, a new public park and new or improved pathways for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.<\/span><\/p>\n

The work remains subject to the Lower Thames Crossing being granted a development consent order (DCO) from the Planning Inspectorate \u2013 required for major infrastructure projects \u2013 and the government signing off its \u00a38bn funding.<\/span><\/p>\n

The scheme\u2019s application for a DCO was accepted in November. Over the next six months, the application will be \u201cthoroughly examined by a panel of independent, government-appointed experts\u201d, National Highways said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The roads body <\/span>conceded earlier this year that it needs new technology to achieve its climate goals for the project<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The scheme was among those<\/span> recently delayed by two years<\/span><\/a> by transport secretary Mark Harper. While the government \u201cremain[s] committed\u201d to the project, he said, the process to get development consent was an opportunity to \u201cconsult further to ensure there is an effective and deliverable plan\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

If planning consent is granted, the six-year construction period is expected to start in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lower Thames Crossing procurement director Katharina Ferguson said: \u201cSkanska has a track record of providing innovative low-carbon solutions to projects, and leaving a genuine legacy of skills and innovation in the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n
