The Ash Level Crossing currently closes for 25 minutes every hour and has also been identified as a potential safety risk by Network Rail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme, which will enable housing development planned by Guildford Borough Council, received a \u2018substantial\u2019 Housing Infrastructure Fund grant from central government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction started last week and is expected to be completed in early 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contract also covers the installation of street lighting, landscaping, fencing, drainage and ponds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VolkerFitzpatrick said it would work with local supply chain contractors and provide apprenticeship placements in liaison with local schools and colleges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deon Scholtz, director of VolkerFitzpatrick\u2019s infrastructure division, said: \u201cOur regional approach will allow us to deliver our in-house bridge and highways expertise in a way which most benefits the communities in which we work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guildford Borough Council\u2019s deputy leader, Tom Hunt, noted that the project would reduce traffic congestion on the A323, improve air quality and help prevent so-called rat-running.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VolkerFitzpatrick has been awarded a \u00a319m contract to build a highway bridge over a rail line in Surrey.
