Tilbury Douglas made a \u00a394m pre-tax loss last year due to legacy costs associated with its separation from Interserve Group.<\/p>\n

The company also saw its turnover fall from \u00a3463.5m to \u00a3405.2m in the year ending 31 December 2022, with directors saying a fall in workload \u201creflected difficulties experienced in winning work during 2021, arising from uncertainties while still part of the Interserve Group\u201d.<\/p>\n

The contractor, formerly one of the largest arms of the \u00a33.2bn-turnover Interserve plc, was spun off from the plc\u2019s successor company Interserve Group in June 2022<\/a>, though is still owned by the same shareholders.<\/p>\n

Revenue at its construction arm shrunk to \u00a3392m from \u00a3446.9m in 2021.<\/p>\n

Tilbury Douglas Holdings Limited \u2013 which includes the company’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing business Tilbury Douglas Engineering \u2013 posted a pre-tax loss of \u00a394m, compared with an \u00a311.2m profit the year before.<\/p>\n

The bulk of the loss stemmed from a third-party buyout of its legacy pension scheme, which cost it \u00a386.4m. The contractor stressed that this was \u201cpurely an accounting\u201d rather than cash or trading loss. Over the long term, the buyout removes its obligations from the scheme.<\/p>\n

Another \u00a314.7m of restructuring costs relates to other areas of its separation from Interserve Group.<\/p>\n

Tilbury Douglas made an underlying operating profit of \u00a36.2m, although this was still less than half of the \u00a312.7m posted in 2021.<\/p>\n

The accounts also show it made \u00a316.5m in provisions, including \u00a38m on unnamed onerous contracts and \u00a37.5m on contract rectification.<\/p>\n

The total includes money set aside to pay for the dispute it lost<\/a> with Northumbrian Water alongside Interserve\u2019s former JV partner Doosan Enpure last year because of cost overruns, delays and quality issues at the Horsley Treatment Works in the Tyne Valley.<\/p>\n

Chair Nick Pollard said a statement with the accounts: \u201cDecoupling from the pension scheme, together with the exit from Interserve Group, have removed huge areas of uncertainty and placed the Tilbury Douglas Group onto a solid footing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn summary, the new Tilbury Douglas Group has returned to be a strongly trading main contractor with a significant and growing order book, as the underlying trading results show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pollard said the company expected its turnover to rise in 2023, forecasting a revenue of \u00a3530m and a return to profitability.<\/p>\n

In the accounts, chief executive Paul Gandy reiterated the contractor\u2019s strategy to \u201ccontinue to focus on those construction areas in which it has a proven track record over many years\u201d, adding that it \u201cwill not be venturing into areas where the risk profile of the projects is viewed as too high\u201d.<\/p>\n
