Morgan Sindall has taken over the rebuilding of a primary school in York where work had stalled after the collapse of former contractor ISG.<\/p>\n

The firm<\/a> was appointed by the Department for Education to complete \u00a310m of construction work at Hempland Primary School in Heworth to the original specifications.<\/p>\n

The job was originally handed to ISG<\/a> last March as part of the government\u2019s school rebuilding programme, with work scheduled to finish this autumn.<\/p>\n

But activity came to a standstill in September when ISG went into administration<\/a>, leaving 2,200 workers redundant and sending shockwaves through the industry.<\/p>\n

Concrete foundations and the steel structure of a new two-storey building had already been put in place at the site on Whitby Avenue at the time of the contractor\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n

The appointment of Morgan Sindall as the new contractor was confirmed by Pathfinder Multi Academy Trust, the group operating the school, in a statement last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes to find a contractor who could complete the building works and we are looking forward to construction now being able to resume on site,\u201d a spokesperson for the trust said.<\/p>\n

Plans to demolish the current school, which dates from the 1960s and was deemed to have reached the end of its functional life, were approved by City of York Council in November 2023.<\/p>\n

Work on the replacement building, which with parking, play space and landscaping will extend over a 2.3-hectare site, is to be phased to allow the existing school to remain operational.<\/p>\n

Site surveys and remedial works are due to be carried out over the next few months, with the new school expected to be up and running in the winter of 2026\/27, the trust said.<\/p>\n

The job represents another windfall for Morgan Sindall, which also picked up a \u00a365m life sciences job<\/a> in London\u2019s Docklands that had been lined up for ISG, although the contract had not been signed by the time administrators were brought in.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the industry, fit-out specialist Structure Tone this month attributed a 17 per cent rise in profit partially due to the legacy of ISG<\/a> as it snapped up key projects and talent in the wake of the contractor\u2019s high-profile collapse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
