Construction sites without access to mains electricity could be powered by solar and green hydrogen instead of diesel in the wake of promising results from a major sustainable energy trial.<\/p>\n

Kier<\/a> is testing the viability of solar, with green hydrogen as a backup, to act as the primary power supply at the welfare and office facilities for the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier scheme in Somerset.<\/p>\n

Data from the trial, which is due to last at least a year, will help determine whether the approach could be scaled up for use on larger sites in the future.<\/p>\n

The development is the latest effort across the industry to reduce diesel consumption on construction sites by exploring the potential of hydrogen as an alternative.<\/p>\n

A consortium led by Bam<\/a> has seen converted dual-fuel excavators at work<\/a> on sites in Manchester, Brighouse and Ravensthorpe along with onsite refuelling, potentially cutting diesel use by 30 per cent.<\/p>\n

The early results of the Somerset trial bode well for the potential of more sustainable power supply solutions, Kier said.<\/p>\n

From the start of January to the end of April, a total of 16,047kWh was used at the site, of which 6,588kWh was from solar power, 9,171kWh from green hydrogen and 287kWh from the backup batteries.<\/p>\n

Using a traditional generator to power the site would have required around 20,000 litres of diesel, the contractor said.<\/p>\n

As well as reducing carbon emissions, the technology reduces noise levels and avoids the risk of spills associated with generators.<\/p>\n

The Environment Agency, which is supporting the trial, said it was a \u201cbig step forward\u201d in helping the agency realise its net-zero goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cConducting trials like this will demonstrate the demand for hydrogen, especially green hydrogen, which is needed to help support the investment into the production and supply to the construction industry and other uses,\u201d said Jo Driffield, a senior engineer in the agency\u2019s innovation team.<\/p>\n

Hannah McIlroy, communications and sustainability director in Kier\u2019s Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks division, said the company was working closely with clients and the supply chain to explore ways of driving down emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that colleagues in Kier and the wider construction industry are keen to discover how our sustainable energy trial is progressing and we are looking forward to sharing more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
