{"id":522862,"date":"2025-06-17T16:36:22","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T15:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=522862"},"modified":"2025-06-17T16:36:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T15:36:55","slug":"the-future-is-orange-for-william-hare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/ma\/the-future-is-orange-for-william-hare-17-06-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"The future is Orange for William Hare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Hare Group has been sold to an entrepreneur based in Manchester for an undisclosed sum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon Orange \u2013 co-owner of rugby union club Sale Sharks and brother of Take That member Jason Orange \u2013 bought a majority stake in the constructional steel firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement today, the contractor said the deal \u201cfurther cements the long-term stability and future of the business, offering the market a clear sign of its ambitions under a single majority shareholder to continue to offer leading structural and engineered steel solutions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>William Hare, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn100-2024-turnover-up-profit-down-as-inflation-bites-12-09-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked 68th in the CN100 index<\/span><\/a>, employs nearly 2,000 staff and was incorporated as a limited company 80 years ago by Bartle Hodgkiss, son-in-law of William Hare, who started the business in 1888.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm has nine offices in the UK and also operates across Europe, the UAE and India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the terms of the deal, Susan Hodgkiss, Bartle\u2019s daughter, will continue to lead William Hare as its chief executive, alongside current director Matthew Nesbit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm is the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2024-top-10-steel-contractors-10-12-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-biggest steel contractor in the UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has worked on flagship jobs including Hinkley Point C, Battersea Power Station, HS2 and the Royal Opera House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nesbit said the deal was an \u201cexciting moment for William Hare and will support our continued growth\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe business is in a really strong financial position, with historically high levels of cash, providing clients the confidence to continue trusting us to deliver the quality and outcomes that we have built our reputation on,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the current climate, it\u2019s clear the market needs confidence in its supply chain, and with our expertise and strong financial position we believe we are well placed to provide that and deliver world-class projects across the built environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orange said: \u201cWith market-leading credentials in engineering, fabrication, construction and sustainability, I know that William Hare is a business that is built for the future and has an exciting role to play in the future of construction and manufacturing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of his involvement with Sale Sharks, Orange founded and is still the chair of CorpAcq, an investment firm based in Altrincham. A majority stake in the business was sold for more than \u00a31bn earlier this year to private equity firm TDR Capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its most recent accounts, for the year to 31 December 2023, William Hare<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sections\/news\/hare-group-returns-to-profit-with-315-5m-turnover-26-09-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">returned to profit thanks to an uptick in its UK business and orders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abroad. Its pre-tax profit of \u00a35.8m compared with a loss of \u00a3853,000 the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turnover also increased by 27 per cent from \u00a3248.3m to \u00a3315.5m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December, Nesbit told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the business had successfully remained \u201cat the forefront of our industry during a time that has been challenging, given ongoing inflationary pressures, project delays and a changing political landscape\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CN <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profiled the construction progress of One Leadenhall, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/project-reports\/one-leadenhall-multiplex-brings-its-goods-to-market-16-09-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a3275m, 36-story development comprising office, retail and restaurant space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
