{"id":523304,"date":"2025-06-24T12:45:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T11:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=523304"},"modified":"2025-06-24T09:08:06","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T08:08:06","slug":"investor-hands-major-boost-to-hinkley-point-c-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/investor-hands-major-boost-to-hinkley-point-c-project-24-06-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Investor hands major boost to Hinkley Point C project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York-based investment giant Apollo has pledged up to \u00a34.5bn to boost EDF projects in the UK, including the Hinkley Point C nuclear build.<\/p>\n<p>The US firm, which handles $785bn (3578bn) of assets worldwide, said funds, affiliates and accounts it managed had agreed to buy fixed-rate notes from the French power company.<\/p>\n<p>Apollo said the deal represented \u201cone of the largest sterling-denominated note issuances on record\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProceeds from the financing will be used primarily to finance EDF projects in the UK, most notably the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sections\/long-reads\/opinion\/the-energy-transition-needs-talent-and-we-need-to-keep-it-moving-08-05-2025\/\">Hinkley Point C<\/a> nuclear power station,\u201d added the investor.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the Somerset energy mega-scheme, being led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/laing-orourke\/\">Laing O&#8217;Rourke<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/bouygues\/\">Bouygues<\/a>, has been somewhat tortuous.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Hinkley Point C was expected to cost about \u00a318bn and be operational within a decade. By 2024, EDF was estimating it could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hinkley-point-faces-10bn-cost-hike-and-four-year-delay-24-01-2024\/\">cost up to \u00a346bn while construction could continue into the 2030s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, EDF&#8217;s follow-up project Sizewell C in Suffolk was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contracts\/nuclear-to-the-fore-as-sizewell-c-gains-14-2bn-in-public-funding-10-06-2025\/\">given the government green light earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apollo partner Jamshid Ehsani said this week: \u201cApollo is pleased to provide this bespoke, large-scale financing to EDF in support of its vital role in advancing European energy sovereignty and power infrastructure, including in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis landmark transaction highlights our deepening partnership with the French government and EDF and reaffirms our commitment to being a premier capital provider to leading European companies. This is the largest-ever capital funding transaction executed by EDF and the largest private credit transaction in the sterling market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Safety breaches at the Hinkley Point C construction site last month sparked a pair of warnings from the nuclear regulator.<\/p>\n<p>First <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/health-and-safety\/warning-over-hinkley-point-c-crane-safety-failings-13-05-2025\/\">an improvement notice was served<\/a> on EDF Energy subsidiary NNB Generation Company Ltd relating to the monitoring and management of tower cranes at the Somerset site.
