The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has formally launched an official investigation into Kingspan\u2019s anticipated acquisition of steel cladding provider Coverworld.<\/p>\n

The move comes after the CMA<\/a> last month invited comments from the industry on the potential impact of the move on competition.<\/p>\n

The regulatory body now has a deadline of 1 September for its phase one decision regarding the merger.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CMA is considering whether it is or may be the case that this transaction, if carried into effect, will result in the creation of a relevant merger situation under the merger provisions of the Enterprise Act 2002,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if so, whether the creation of that situation may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services.\u201d<\/p>\n

If it is upheld, the investigation will move to a second phase, which will see an independent panel of experts examine the case.<\/p>\n

Kingspan, which manufactured around 5 per cent of the insulation used by contractors on Grenfell Tower, was one of the companies criticised by the public inquiry into the 2017 fire at the building.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, it was\u00a0threatened with a complete ban<\/a>\u00a0from public work in the UK after exhibiting what housing secretary Angela Rayner described as \u201cdisgraceful mercenary behaviour\u201d.<\/p>\n

Chesterfield-based Coverworld is a\u00a0producer and supplier of single and twin skin coated steel cladding systems.<\/p>\n

Its most recent accounts for the year ending 30 June 2024 showed a turnover of \u00a326.31m, a decrease of 17 per cent on the year before, which the directors blamed mainly on the global fall in steel prices.<\/p>\n

The invitation to comment closes on 9 July.<\/p>\n

In 2020, the CMA investigated Kingspan over its planned acquisition of\u00a0materials supplier SIG\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0building solutions division.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
