In a trading update this week, Kier announced it expects to see \u201cgood growth” going forward, \u201creflecting strong operational execution\u201d.<\/p>\n

That optimism is a far cry from the financial nerves on display before Andrew Davies took over as chief executive in March 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following an\u00a0 announcement on Tuesday (22 July) that Davies will retire in October<\/a>, experts have hailed his \u201cexceptional\u201d work and the legacy he will leave.<\/p>\n

Davies joined Kier in 2019 as it was still reeling from a 40 per cent drop in its share price after it issued a \u00a3250m rights issue in December 2018.<\/p>\n

In a trading update the previous month<\/a>, the company revealed that average monthly net debt for the six months to the end of December was expected to be around \u00a3390m.<\/p>\n

This compared with the average of \u00a3410m recorded for the first six months of the year.<\/p>\n

Reports at the time suggested some of Kier\u2019s largest shareholders were pushing<\/a> to oust its top executives following the rights issue.<\/p>\n

Davies\u2019 predecessor Haydn Mursell was removed by the Kier board just weeks<\/a> later.<\/p>\n

In brief, Kier<\/a> was in a precarious position when Davies took over, analysts say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were absolutely awash with debt, and drowning quickly,\u201d DRS Bond Management managing director Chris Davies told Construction News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But Davies has done an \u201cexceptional job in very difficult circumstances at Kier\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe turned that around, he successfully stabilised the business, he grew the order book and improved profitability. Really, you can\u2019t ask for much more from a CEO than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mirroring his view, another analyst told CN<\/em> Davies has \u201cperformed very solidly\u201d, pointing in particular to Kier\u2019s \u201ccapital structure improvement\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c[That] is the real legacy he leaves,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause of what happened to Carillion and the situation that Interserve was in, all eyes were on Kier\u2019s capital structure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davies was earmarked to join Carillion as its chief executive, but the contractor collapsed just one week before he was due to start \u2013 still the biggest corporate failure in the history of the UK construction sector.<\/p>\n

Within two years, Kier\u2019s fortunes were on the rise and in April 2021, it reported its first profit for nearly three years, as staff numbers were cut and the firm sold off its housebuilding business for \u00a3110m. It also announced a planned equity rise of between \u00a3190m and \u00a3240m.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve materially changed the nature of this business in two years,\u201d Davies told CN <\/em>after announcing the<\/a> profit in the half year to December 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have exited non-core loss-making businesses, we\u2019ve reduced the structural headcount of the group and the costs of completing that are all behind this [reported profit].\u201d<\/p>\n

Davies, from DRS Bond Management, said markets needed between 18 months to two years to trust that the new chief executive could turn around Kier\u2019s fortunes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was doubt in Andrew\u2019s stability from the markets, he responded with growth results and successfully turned the ship around,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The supply chain also needed reassurances that Kier was in a strong place, Davies said.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery few people wanted to work for Kier when he started but he was very honest with the supply chain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would suggest that supply chain satisfaction with Kier now is much higher than it was when he took over.\u201d<\/p>\n

The proof is in the results. In 2019 and 2020 Kier made a combined loss of \u00a3450m. Last September, it revealed a pre-tax profit of \u00a368.1m<\/a>, with turnover rising by around 15 per cent to \u00a33.9bn.<\/p>\n

Last March, Kier returned to the FTSE 250 for the first time<\/a> in five years.<\/p>\n

Stuart Togwell, currently executive director and group managing director of construction at Kier, will assume the reins after Davies steps down. He joined his former Wates boss at Kier in September 2019 as commercial<\/a> director.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
