Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has launched an investigation into \u201cissues\u201d with ground close to a construction work on a major tram extension, amid reports of garden collapses and cracked walls.<\/p>\n

The organisation, which is delivering more than a \u00a31bn of works on the regional network, is looking into the causes of earth movement reportedly experienced near to works to branch out a metro line to Brierley Hill.<\/p>\n

The Daily Mail<\/em> reported<\/a> that cracks had appeared in lawns and patios in Middle Meadow, Tipton.<\/p>\n

The Midlands Metro Alliance, which includes Bouygues UK<\/a>, Barhale and Colas, is delivering the 11km Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension nearby.<\/p>\n

A TfWM spokesperson said: \u201cWe have taken this matter very seriously and fully understand the frustration residents are experiencing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as we were made aware of the issues, we began working with residents and specialist engineers to carry out an investigation to identify the potential cause.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome investigations are ongoing because the potential causes are complex given they include unknown historic ground conditions and developments over the years which predate the start of works for the metro.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have taken steps to mitigate the risks and we have supported residents throughout this process and will continue to do so as works progress with stabilising the embankment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The extension will branch off the current West Midlands Metro line just east of the Wednesbury Great Western Street Metro stop, before heading through Tipton and Dudley on its way to Brierley Hill to the west of Birmingham.<\/p>\n

It is being delivered in two phases, with the section to Dudley town centre expected to open to passenger services this autumn.<\/p>\n

The second phase, which will see the route further extended to Brierley Hill, is expected to ramp up when the first is finished. There are plans for up to 14 trams stops along the route.<\/p>\n
