{"id":526166,"date":"2025-08-04T13:00:58","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T12:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=526166"},"modified":"2025-08-04T15:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T14:29:16","slug":"laing-orourke-doubles-profit-and-says-contracting-model-is-broken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/laing-orourke-doubles-profit-and-says-contracting-model-is-broken-04-08-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Laing O&#8217;Rourke doubles profit amid \u2018broken\u2019 contracting model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laing O\u2019Rourke has continued its financial recovery after more than doubling its profit and margin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-tax profit at the firm rose to \u00a341.5m in the year to 31 March, up from \u00a318.1m in 2024 \u2013 the year in which the business returned to the black following a huge loss of \u00a3288m in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, turnover stayed steady, falling back only slightly from \u00a33.99bn to \u00a33.96bn, translating to a pre-tax margin rise from 0.4 per cent to 1 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm finished<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/cn-intelligence\/data-dashboards\/cn100-turnover-profit-and-margin-23-08-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth in last year\u2019s CN100 index of top contractors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on its 2023 turnover of \u00a33.37bn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the results,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/laing-orourke\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chief executive Cathal O\u2019Rourke said: \u201cWe&#8217;re seeing more momentum flow in behind the organisation, which is giving us the opportunity to build our financial resilience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said the firm had a target to increase its margin, and that current performance was being held back by \u201ca couple of [unnamed] legacy projects\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy expectation [\u2026] is that, as we go into next year and the years beyond, you\u2019re going to see a continued improvement. We don\u2019t think [the current margin level] is the right space to be, especially not with some of the risks that have been taken on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using strident language, the results statement said that \u201cthe current contracting model is broken\u201d, but that \u201cthis creates an opportunity for companies that are able to address it\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO said the firm was looking to focus on contracts with early client-contractor engagement: \u201cI think there are already some great models and places that we can play. But if it is just fixed price, lump sum? It seems to be a race to the bottom where you\u2019re not determining what\u2019s actually playing out, and we\u2019re not really interested in playing that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm included a small increase in defects provisions related to the Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA), up from \u00a319.6m last year to \u00a321.7m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the longer-term forecast for the impact of BSA-related remediation of historical building-safety issues rose from \u00a368.5m to \u00a3145.2m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chief executive said: \u201cI think the industry has to recognise, if we\u2019re trying to drive change, we\u2019re trying to drive investable models, and drive certainty, that a change in law can be quite difficult in that situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut I think what you\u2019re seeing with us is that we want to stand in behind our obligations and the projects we\u2019re taking provisions on to allow us to do that in a sensible way, and we\u2019re going to work to make sure that that isn\u2019t a feature of things going forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before exceptional items, the firm\u2019s pre-tax profit was \u00a382m, compared with \u00a358m the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Profit before exceptional items in the Europe hub rose from \u00a35.4m to \u00a336.1m, while in the Australia hub it fell from \u00a353m to \u00a347.2m, with the corporate centre accounting for a <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span>loss<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> of \u00a31.3m for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n<p>The firm reported that its order book stood at a record \u00a311.9bn at the end of March. However, it said that figure had risen to \u00a315.8bn as a result of work subsequently won in its Europe hub.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the reporting period, the business held \u00a3284.7m in net cash, up from \u00a3278.5m last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also held \u00a324.1m in short-term repayable bank loans and overdrafts, down from \u00a329.3m. But loans repayable beyond 12 months\u2019 time more than doubled from \u00a355.7m to \u00a3114m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a drop in its average monthly headcount, from 10,961 to 10,042 employees, the contractor\u2019s annual wage bill rose from \u00a3741.9m to \u00a3748.4m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO also revealed that the firm was still in conversation with the government about taking over from ISG as the main contractor at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/isg-to-build-300m-bucks-prison-approved-by-gove-31-01-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HM Prison Grendon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re working that through but we\u2019re hand-in-glove with the [Ministry] of Justice on that,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Laing O\u2019Rourke has continued its financial recovery after more than doubling its profit and margin.
