{"id":526528,"date":"2025-08-08T12:45:36","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T11:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=526528"},"modified":"2025-08-08T14:25:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T13:25:09","slug":"assent-boss-resigns-from-directorships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/peoplemoves\/assent-boss-resigns-from-directorships-08-08-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Assent boss resigns from directorships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chief executive of building-control firm Assent has stepped down from his role, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has learnt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies House records show that, in the last week of July, Iain Thomson resigned from his director position at 17 linked firms where he was listed as CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These included Assent Building Compliance, formerly known as Assent Building Control, and parent company Assent Building Compliance and Safety Group, which was previously called Alphabet BC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also resigned as director of registered building-control approvers (RBCAs) LB Building Control, Oculus Building Consultancy, and the Clarke Banks Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CN<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contacted the firm this morning, it was told that Thomson was currently \u201cout of the business, sick\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A previous email sent on 31 July to the company by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CN<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requesting more information went unanswered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomson had been on the board of Wakefield-based Assent BC \u2013 which acquired Clarke Banks two years ago \u2013 since 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/building-safety\/work-on-50-high-risk-projects-must-pause-says-safety-regulator-18-06-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came into the national spotlight last year after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CN <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed that the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) had issued an industry alert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after Assent BC failed to register as an RBCA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, along with the insolvency of the unrelated AIS Surveyors, meant work on more than 50 ongoing projects classed as higher-risk had to stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BSR said it did not have information about which projects were affected but said the jobs should not continue until they were validated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/building-safety\/firm-involved-in-high-risk-buildings-delay-receives-sanction-01-07-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the then Construction Industry Council Approved Inspectors Register (CICAIR) body twice sanctioned Assent BC for breaching its code of conduct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One followed the firm being convicted under Section 57 of the Building Act 1984 \u2013 a law relating to the issuance of reckless or false information on a notice or certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assent BC\u2019s accounts show it was convicted in September 2020 and given a level 3 sanction the following year; following a review, another CICAIR panel was held in January 2024, which imposed a less-severe level 2 sanction for the same offence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, in October 2024, LB Building Control<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/building-safety\/full-details-of-bsr-framework-revealed-11-04-2025\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won a place on the BSR\u2019s higher-risk building framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for companies that carry out tasks such as building-control certification and approved inspection work for the regulator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An alleged lack of transparency around procurement for the framework<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/building-safety\/concerns-raised-over-bsrs-frameworks-process-18-11-2024\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was criticised the following month.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assent BC\u2019s accounts for the year ending 31 December 2023, the most recent to be published, show it turned over \u00a32.8m during the period \u2013 a sharp drop from \u00a36.6m in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A restructuring of the business was cited for the revenue drop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the period, it made a \u00a3354,393 pre-tax loss, which was an improvement on the \u00a31.4m loss the year before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm employed an average of 71 people, while its highest-paid director took home an \u00a385,000 package.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parent company Assent Building Compliance and Safety Group\u2019s accounts for the same period showed it achieved revenues of \u00a324.3m, down slightly from \u00a324.6m in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company made a pre-tax loss of \u00a32.2m, a decline from the \u00a3202,090 pre-tax loss posted in the prior year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other companies owned by the group include Xact Consultancy and Training Ltd, acquired in 2022, where Thomson was also listed as a director until 28 July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assent did not respond to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CN\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> request for further comment about Thomson\u2019s situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PR firm previously used by the company said it was no longer engaged by it.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The chief executive of building-control firm Assent has stepped down from his role, Construction News has learnt.
