{"id":526821,"date":"2025-08-13T12:09:31","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T11:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=526821"},"modified":"2025-08-14T10:57:46","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T09:57:46","slug":"balfour-beatty-hits-3-margin-target-a-year-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/balfour-beatty-hits-3-margin-target-a-year-early-13-08-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Balfour Beatty hits 3% margin target a year early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balfour Beatty\u2019s UK construction arm has shattered its own 3 per cent margin target 12 months earlier than expected, according to the company\u2019s first-half (H1) results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operating profit at the construction division jumped from \u00a334m in H1 2024 to \u00a356m in the six months to the end of June this year, on revenue of \u00a31.56bn versus \u00a31.46bn in H1 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That translated into a profit margin of 3.6 per cent, up from 2.3 per cent in the equivalent period last year. Balfour Beatty has had a 3 per cent margin target in place for H1 2026 for the past eight years. This year\u2019s numbers mean the benchmark has been achieved 12 months ahead of schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just over a year ago, chief executive Leo Quinn said in a podcast that he would be \u201cembarrassed\u201d if the overall group did not double its roughly 2 per cent margin \u201cin the current environment\u201d, given the way that the company\u2019s order book had changed, as well as the expected volume of investment into UK infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Balfour Beatty\u2019s support-services division, which deals with maintenance, upgrades and management services, also provided a boost to the overall H1 figures. Revenue was 19 per cent higher at \u00a3662m and operating profit rose 35 per cent to \u00a346m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the performance of the US construction arm acted as a drag on the numbers, posting a loss of \u00a311m in H1 on \u00a32.09bn of revenue. Much of the negative impact of the US division was down to a series of cost overruns and delays related to a highways project in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, as a group, Balfour Beatty was able to post a \u00a320m jump in H1 pre-tax profit to \u00a3132m on revenue of \u00a35.15bn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur continuing strong cash generation is underpinned by a growing order book with improved margins and lower-risk contract forms,\u201d Quinn said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis provides the board with increasing confidence in significant future cash generation that supports our ongoing dividends and share buybacks. This is demonstrated by the momentum in our key growth areas in the first half.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balfour Beatty said it had positioned itself to benefit from the government\u2019s infrastructure ambitions, including contracts at the recently greenlit Sizewell C nuclear power station build, Net Zero Teesside Power and ongoing work on the HS2 railway project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At \u00a319.5bn at the halfway point of 2025, Balfour Beatty\u2019s order book was bigger than at this time last year (\u00a316.6bn).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRecent UK government announcements confirm a deep pipeline of major infrastructure projects which closely align with the group\u2019s unique expert capabilities and will further enhance the quality of the future order book,\u201d Quinn said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysts at Peel Hunt noted \u201csignificant order-book momentum, with an active and substantial pipeline\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balfour Beatty announced in March that after more than 10 years at the helm, Quinn would step down as chief executive later this year. He will be replaced by Philip Hoare, chief operating officer at the Canadian firm, Atkins R\u00e9alis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While succession at the top level can sometimes be a concern to shareholders, customers and contractors, Michael O&#8217;Shea, construction partner at law firm Gowling WLG, suggests such a worry might be misplaced in Balfour Beatty\u2019s case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny caution shareholders may exercise regarding the forthcoming leadership transition following chief executive Leo Quinn\u2019s departure after more than a decade of providing stability and establishing a solid foundation for the company will be offset by the confidence in Philip Hoare, Quinn\u2019s successor,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe has extensive experience and is in the advantageous position of the company continuing to support continued growth and drive business objectives forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Balfour Beatty\u2019s UK construction arm has shattered its own 3 per cent margin target 12 months earlier than expected, according to the company\u2019s first-half (H1) results.
