Kier Group has reported higher-than-expected profit and a record order book after a third consecutive year of revenue growth.<\/p>\n

For the year ended 30 June 2025, turnover rose 4 per cent to \u00a34.08bn, compared with \u00a33.91bn in 2024, \u00a33.38bn in 2023 and \u00a33.14bn in 2022.<\/p>\n

Pre-tax profit climbed 15 per cent to \u00a378.1m, up from \u00a368.1m in 2024 \u2500 \u201cahead of our initial expectations\u201d, according to chief executive Andrew Davies \u2500 and return on capital employed improved from 10.7 per cent to 11.8 per cent.<\/p>\n

Kier\u2019s<\/a> pre-tax margin rose to 1.9 per cent from 1.7 per cent \u2500 a marked improvement on the -5.8 per cent recorded in 2019 when Davies (pictured) took charge.<\/p>\n

In its Stock Exchange announcement this morning, Kier said the improved financial performance reflected \u201cstrong operational delivery across all businesses\u201d and progress under its growth plan.<\/p>\n

Kier said its order book hit a record \u00a311bn, securing 91 per cent of its expected 2026 revenue and 70 per cent of 2027\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Free cashflow was \u00a3155m, down from \u00a3186m, while net cash rose 22 per cent to \u00a3204m.<\/p>\n

The board proposed a dividend of 7.2p per share, up from 5.2p, and launched a \u00a320m share buyback in January.<\/p>\n

Kier ranked third in the CN100 2024 index<\/a> of top contractors by turnover. Its latest results covered the first year of a long-term growth plan, having completed a three-year plan last year that it said \u201cdeleveraged the business markedly\u201d.<\/p>\n

Infrastructure services accounted for 52 per cent of group revenue, including Kier\u2019s first contracts with Southern Water\u2019s AMP8 framework.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at the governmental side, the New Hospital Programme is kicking off, Defence DIO programme is kicking off, the MoJ programme<\/a> is well advanced \u2500 and we\u2019re with the Scottish Prison Service in Glasgow<\/a>,\u201d Davies told Construction News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Kier flagged \u201canticipated delays\u201d in finalising the RIS3 road investment plan<\/a> and a later-than-expected start to Network Rail\u2019s CP7 period.<\/p>\n

But Davies said the firm\u2019s unheralded design capabilities offer resilience. \u201cWe\u2019re taking the design lead for the five sections of the A66, which we\u2019ll build. So that gives us that excellent continuity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we don\u2019t necessarily shout out about it enough \u2500 the design capability in the company \u2500 but it has given us excellent throughput in the current year and future visibility in the road sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction delivered 47 per cent of revenue, including a \u00a3100m-plus job at HMP Northumberland and four Department for Education contracts worth \u00a3210m.<\/p>\n

Investment in Kier\u2019s property arm, which accounted for 1 per cent of turnover, rose, with \u00a3198m of capital employed and a 15 per cent return target by 2028.<\/p>\n

Davies is handing over as chief executive next month to Stuart Togwell. After six years, he said it had been a \u201cprivilege\u201d to lead Kier through a transformation into \u201ca strong and sustainable business with enhanced resilience and a reinforced financial position\u201d.<\/p>\n

He told CN<\/em>: \u201cI know Stuart will continue with a very disciplined approach we\u2019ve had to bidding. He\u2019s been largely the architect of much of what we\u2019ve done in terms of bidding.\u201d<\/p>\n

The departing chief executive added that Kier had started the new financial year \u201cslightly ahead\u201d of expectations.<\/p>\n

The firm is working with nine clients on 17 frameworks with an advertised value of up to \u00a315bn. Davies said he anticipates that these frameworks will be an engine for continued growth amid the government\u2019s \u00a3725bn infrastructure strategy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
