Morrisroe Ltd has become the latest contractor to suffer a cyber-attack, <\/span>Construction News<\/span><\/i> can reveal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Founder and chief executive Brian Morrisroe contacted staff on Wednesday (17 September) to advise them that personal data held by the company, including financial and banking information, may have been compromised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a team of experts including cyber-forensic specialists currently reviewing the situation,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the meantime, could we please ask that you remain extra vigilant with regard to your personal financial matters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPlease raise any unusual activity immediately with your bank and report any unexpected correspondence from financial institutions to their fraud team immediately.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Morrisroe said the request was \u201cpurely a precautionary measure\u201d until the company has \u201cclarity on the extent of any issues that may have occurred\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement to CN<\/em>, the CEO said: \u201c<\/span>The issue was discovered on Sunday and there has been a rapid response at head office.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We are in the process of determining the extent of the issue, but recovery is nearly complete bar one item, which is about to complete.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Whilst it has been a distraction at head office, we are pleased to say we are fully operational on all our project sites. Our business operations have not been affected.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It just goes to show that even well-prepared organisations can be vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated players.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Contractors including Bouygues UK, Bam and Interserve have<\/span> previously<\/span><\/a> fallen victim to cyber-attacks, with the government<\/span> warning in 2023<\/span><\/a> that construction businesses were among the most behind when it came to online protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It said 26 per cent of construction companies did not have adequate software security update policies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, cyber-security firm<\/span> Kroll warned<\/span><\/a> last year that the sector uses lots of digital sign-ins via mobile devices, and that workers are potentially more likely to fall for phishing lures if they are out and about and being less vigilant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022 the Chartered Institute of Building and the National Cyber Security Centre published<\/span> joint guidance<\/span><\/a> on how small and medium construction companies could protect themselves from cyber-attack.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
