Dozens of tier one contractors are backing former England footballer Trevor Steven in his bid to tackle mental health in the construction sector.<\/p>\n

Since launching a new mental health charter to address suicide rates and psychological ill-health in the industry last month, more than 50 firms have come forward to support the initiative.<\/p>\n

Steven launched the 10-point charter through his charity Mindflow<\/a>, which uses football to encourage construction workers to talk about their problems, and to help contractors and supply chain firms embed mental health support on site.<\/p>\n

Using Match-Up events, he takes former footballers onto sites to help break the ice and encourage conversations about mental health.<\/p>\n

To mark World Mental Health Day today (10 October), Steven is urging more tier ones and subcontractors to get involved in the scheme in a bid to save lives and address the \u201csilent crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n

He told Construction News<\/em>: \u201cConstruction is a standout industry for suicide.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuicide is four times worse in construction than any other industry and we need to be aware of it not just on World Mental Health Day but on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Mindflow I\u2019m wanting to find a common ground of communication and join the dots between football, construction and mental health. We are endeavouring to get the conversation started.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe created the charter for people to sign up to, we want the tier ones down to the supply chain to be a part of it to improve businesses\u2019 attitudes to looking after workers bit by bit down the supply chain. We all need to be part of this. If we can just save one life, it will be worthwhile.\u201d<\/p>\n

Research by the charity found that two construction workers take their own lives every working day in the UK.<\/p>\n

It found that more than half of construction workers (56 per cent) are currently experiencing mental health struggles, a quarter have contemplated suicide, and they are 10 times more likely to take their own lives than die in a workplace accident.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are turning up to site with poor mental health and deaths are still happening,\u201d Steven said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTier ones have so many subcontractors on site who are not really aware of mental health support, they turn up for a job and might move on to another job a month later but while they are there we want to get the conversation started using football.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Lighthouse Charity<\/a> provides 24\/7 support to the industry and has funded thousands of counselling sessions to help families in the sector.<\/p>\n

Chief executive Sarah Bolton told CN<\/em>: \u201cBreaking the stigma around mental health is vital and reaching out for support isn\u2019t weakness, it\u2019s strength. Our industry still struggles with this perception, but we\u2019re working hard to change it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe future of construction depends on investing in its people, that means providing not just short-term aid but long-term solutions to help workers thrive. No one in this industry should feel that they have to face their struggles alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, construction specialist McLaughlin & Harvey launched its You Matter Health and Wellbeing Roadshow to visit almost 1,000 people across 19 UK sites to bring health and wellbeing checks to employees, subcontractors and clients.<\/p>\n

Balfour Beatty Vinci has also teamed up with charity Tough to Talk to create a digital learning module focusing on the effects of gambling on mental health for its employees.<\/p>\n

Modular firm Newspace is seeking to overhaul conditions on sites to improve employees mental health.<\/p>\n

“We must consider the significant effect that a person’s environment can have on their mental wellbeing,” Andy Cullimore, managing director at Newspace, said.<\/p>\n

“Inadequate toilets, cramped rest spaces, and unhygienic conditions are not minor inconveniences, they can contribute to daily stress, anxiety, and feelings of exclusion.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
