{"id":531173,"date":"2025-10-21T12:45:39","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=531173"},"modified":"2025-10-21T13:03:55","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T12:03:55","slug":"plan-to-replace-btecs-with-v-levels-confirmed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/skills\/plan-to-replace-btecs-with-v-levels-confirmed-21-10-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Plan to replace BTECs with V levels unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New vocational V level qualifications are set to be introduced as part of a government effort to tackle the skills crisis in sectors such as construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the proposals, revealed in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/68f518ee06e6515f7914c7ce\/Post-16_Education_and_Skills_white_paper_Accessible_Version.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72-page skills white paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Monday (21 October), V levels will replace technical qualifications at level 3, including BTECs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim is to simplify the \u201cconfusing\u201d system for 16 to 19-year-olds, which the government has admitted is \u201chard for both employers and learners to navigate\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, about 900 approved qualifications are available at level 3, including a host of construction-related courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will be able to take V levels alongside A levels, unlike<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sections\/long-reads\/technical-difficulties-the-mixed-fortunes-of-t-level-courses-15-08-2025\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are a direct alternative to A levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V levels will be available for \u201ca range of vocational subjects covering key employment sectors, based on nationally set content\u201d, according to the white paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe expect new V levels will be similar in size to an A level so as to be easily combined with other V levels or A levels, to allow learners the flexibility to explore different areas,\u201d it says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A consultation on the proposals is due to launch this autumn to \u201ctest the key design principles of the qualification\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement received a mixed reaction. Vincent Thornley, managing director of UK engineering company Fundamentals, said the plans looked \u201cmore like a rebrand of existing qualifications than a genuine simplification\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added: \u201cThe government would make a far greater impact by expanding apprenticeships at all levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie Cater, senior policy manager for skills and employment at manufacturing trade body Make UK, said: \u201cEmployers often find the post-16 landscape difficult to navigate. The government is right to try to address this by streamlining the large number of qualifications with the introduction of V levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCare must also be taken to ensure that employers understand these new qualifications. The skills and knowledge they will give to young people, and the expectations [placed] on employers to provide industry experience, must be made clear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposals come seven months after chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled a \u00a3625m package to boost construction skills in her Spring Statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of this, the government is investing \u00a3100m over the next four years to expand so-called construction skills bootcamps, as it presses on with its ambition of building 1.5 million homes during the tenure of this parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New vocational V level qualifications are set to be introduced as part of a government effort to tackle the skills crisis in sectors such as construction.
