{"id":531486,"date":"2025-10-23T08:51:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T07:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=531486"},"modified":"2025-12-05T11:32:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T11:32:28","slug":"hs2-resumes-london-tunnel-sites-work-after-serious-near-miss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/hs2-resumes-london-tunnel-sites-work-after-serious-near-miss-23-10-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 resumes London tunnel sites work after &#8216;serious&#8217; near-miss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HS2 has started a phased return to work at just over half its London tunnel sites, three weeks after work was suspended following a serious safety incident.<\/p>\n<p>Work had been halted since Monday 29 September, when a beam struck a crane basket with two workers inside, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/hs2-london-tunnels-work-suspended-after-safety-incident-10-10-2025\/\"><em>Construction News<\/em> previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a phased return to work has begun this week on 11 of HS2\u2019s 19 tunnel sites in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for HS2 Ltd said:\u00a0\u201cSafety will always be our top priority which is why all works were halted on the London tunnels section of HS2 following a serious near-miss incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have now begun a safe, structured restart across some of these worksites following a comprehensive review of safety procedures and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditional measures are being implemented by our contractor, Skanska Costain Strabag joint venture (SCS JV), to ensure the safety of the workforce and we continue to closely monitor performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Work restarted on Monday across three sites, with additional safety measures being put in place, including a focus on improved management of change, supervision and leadership engagement, HS2 confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>A further eight sites resumed operations on Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>More sites are expected to restart once additional safety measures have been considered following the review.<\/p>\n<p>The original incident happened during the disassembly of a gantry crane at the Green Park Way vent shaft in west London.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody was hurt, but SCS JV flagged the issue with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/pac-chair-urges-government-to-learn-from-hs2-disaster-15-10-2025\/\">HS2<\/a> and halted work while a review of its safety procedures took place.<\/p>\n<p>A full investigation is presently taking place in addition to a review of safety and leadership across all SCS JV sites.<\/p>\n<p>SCS JV is the main works civils contractor across the HS2 London tunnels area, which comprises a 14-mile stretch from Euston station to the Copthall tunnel in Hillingdon.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday (22 October), HS2 announced that an 18-mile section to connect the high-speed rail line to the West Coast Mainline is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/hs2-link-up-to-west-coast-mainline-to-be-delayed-for-four-more-years-23-10-2025\/\">set to be delayed for a further four years<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HS2 has started a phased return to work at just over half its London tunnel sites, three weeks after work was suspended following a serious safety incident.
