The broad use of digital product passports (DPPs) in the construction sector is a matter of when, not if \u2013 but significant obstacles remain, industry experts have said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once rolled out, DPPs will create a structured digital record for construction products including information on materials, performance, compliance and end-of-life.<\/p>\n

Adoption by the sector \u201cis bound to happen\u201d, Construction Products Association chief executive Peter Caplehorn said on the latest episode of Construction News\u2019<\/i> First Site <\/i>podcast<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in future, digital passport information will be as commonplace as the CE conformity mark, said NBS innovation director Dr Stephen Hamil.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It’ll come in over the next two or three years as a fact,\u201d<\/span> he added.<\/p>\n

But challenges range from the need for consistent data standards, to economic pressures on manufacturers and contractors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speakers said one of the most persistent barriers to DPP use is the absence of a coherent, universal approach to structuring product information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Caplehorn said the sector still lacks agreement on the level of detail needed within a passport.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the heart of this, it\u2019s about the granularity of the information,\u201d he explained. \u201cAll building projects include products, and within the product the DNA is the granular core information of its properties.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Caplehorn\u2019s view, it still needs to be decided as to which datasets within this DNA are essential, and how they can be consistently structured across the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got several<\/span> emergent schemes<\/span><\/a>\u2026 but none of them, as far as I know, actually grapple with this crucial question,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without standardisation across product groups, the industry risks \u201ccomparing apples and\u2026 slightly damaged apples, or even apples and pears\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mace sustainability lead Matt Brinklow agreed, saying the lack of standardised formats leaves contractors fielding conflicting demands.<\/span><\/p>\n

His firm has trialled material passports across multiple projects, yet client demands have made a standardised approach impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt must be a real headache for the manufacturers,\u201d Brinklow observed, \u201cbecause they\u2019re being asked to provide things in several different formats, several different ways [and] slightly different information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt obviously makes it more challenging for us as a contractor. In every project, we have to define what it is we\u2019re trying to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamil said construction product manufacturers are getting ready for a DPP future despite the challenges involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re looking at the principles and making sure that their information\u2019s shipshape, so to speak, so that when eventually the different product categories are defined for their passports, the manufacturers have only got a small step to get there, as opposed to trying to do everything in a rush,\u201d he noted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamil added that client demand is an influential driver behind the emerging use of DPPs in construction, in the absence of a formal industry mandate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brinklow agreed, saying: \u201cIf the client is asking for it [DPPs], then that has a heck of a lot of influence and sway over what happens.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said that blue-chip and institutional developers want greater transparency to support sustainability reporting or maintain their own digital building records.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet the financial cost of adopting DPPs is an issue, particularly when tagging complex components or using RFID systems to enable digital passporting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a cost to all these things\u2026 it works really smoothly with precast products, but with in-situ products like concrete, it\u2019s more challenging,\u201d Brinklow said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caplehorn warned that many SMEs and manufacturers lack the capacity to invest in digitalisation, adding that \u201cthe next 12 months is going to be really crucial\u201d on this front.<\/span><\/p>\n
