The financial performance of the UK\u2019s top 10 concrete contractors is a mixed bag. While most reported a drop in turnover in their latest accounts, most also managed to improve their bottom line.<\/p>\n

Collectively, firms in this year\u2019s index reported a 15 per cent jump in pre-tax profit to \u00a397m. This was despite a 3 per cent dip in combined revenue to just under \u00a31.9bn.<\/p>\n

However, one firm \u2013 table-topping FP McCann – accounted for nearly half of the top 10\u2019s total pre-tax profit. The Northern Irish contractor reported a 10 per cent rise in profit to \u00a346m in 2024, despite its revenue being broadly flat. Its figures do, however, include its non-concrete operations.<\/p>\n

Laing O\u2019Rourke\u2019s Expanded subsidiary, in fourth place, was the most improved performer, with profit more than tripling to \u00a310.9m. Unlike most of its competitors, it also reported a significant jump (29 per cent) in turnover.<\/p>\n

Profit at Oliver Connell & Son doubled to \u00a320.3m, propelling it up two places to fifth. Daniel O\u2019Donovan, the west London-based firm\u2019s finance director, says it benefited from diversifying, thereby relying less on residential work in the capital. Instead, the company upped its regional presence and turned to infrastructure projects last year, as well as entering the data centre market. \u201cThis has enabled the business to report margins which better reflect the risk-reward ratio of the projects we deliver,\u201d O\u2019Donovan says.<\/p>\n

Lower down the top 10, Kilnbridge Construction suffered the largest drop in turnover last year. The east London firm reported a 28 per cent fall in revenue to \u00a385.9m, partly due to the previous Conservative government\u2019s decision to scale back the HS2 rail megaproject. Kilnbridge\u2019s pre-tax profit also more than halved to \u00a31.48m.<\/p>\n

The aggregate median pre-tax margin across the top 10 broadened from 2.7 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Hertfordshire-based Ground Construction, a new entrant and the eighth-largest contractor in this year\u2019s list, registered a margin of 3.3 per cent, up from 1.1 per cent the year before. Expanded widened its margin from 2.1 per cent to 5.6 per cent.<\/p>\n
