Environment Agency<\/a> (EA) after huge mounds of waste materials were discovered next to\u00a0the A34 close to Kidlington.<\/p>\nThe site includes a mixture of construction and household waste, an EA spokesperson told Construction News<\/em>.<\/p>\nOn Tuesday (25 November), the EA said a 39-year-old man from the Guildford area had been arrested on suspicion of illegal fly tipping.<\/p>\n
It comes after rubbish was discovered dumped along a 150 metre stretch of land between two rows of trees. At some points it is 6 metres high.<\/p>\n
The arrest is part of an investigation being led by the EA’s National Environmental Crime Unit.<\/p>\n
Phil Davies, head of the joint unit for waste crime, said: \u201cThe Environment Agency is working closely with other law enforcement partners to identify and hold those responsible for the horrendous illegal dumping of waste that has taken place in Kidlington.<\/p>\n
\u201cA number of active lines of investigation are being pursued by specialist officers.\u201d<\/p>\n
EA officials first visited the site on 2 July following reports of illegal tipping and issued a cease-and-desist letter.<\/p>\n
After tipping continued, the EA applied for a court order to close the site, which was granted on 23 October.<\/p>\n
The site is close to the River Cherwell, raising fears there could be a risk of pollutants leaching from the waste and entering the water course.<\/p>\n
The EA said it is installing large sandbags between the waste pile and the river and is securing the site with Heras fencing to prevent any more illegal tipping.<\/p>\n
Anna Burns, the EA\u2019s area director for the Thames, said: \u201cThe appalling illegal waste dump in Kidlington has rightly provoked outrage over the potential consequences for the community and environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been working round the clock with the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit to bring the perpetrators to justice and make them pay for this offence. Our investigative efforts have secured an arrest, which will be the first step in delivering justice for residents and punishing those responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the government\u2019s Environment and Climate Change Committee, over 38 million tonnes of waste is illegally handled every year, with an estimated cost to England\u2019s economy of over \u00a31bn.<\/p>\n
