With revenue of \u00a3198m, it sits more than \u00a350m ahead of its nearest competitor, Permasteelisa, which posted turnover of \u00a3146.2m. Stanmore also enjoyed the highest pre-tax profit in the top 10 \u2013 its \u00a320.9m haul being more than two and a half times that of the next-placed profit maker, CA Group (\u00a37.8m).<\/p>\n<p>Stanmore chief executive Raj Manak notes that the company is different to some of the others in the index in that it works across sectors, including drylining and windows. \u201cIf we were just purely doing facade [work], we would have struggled financially,\u201d he tells <em>Construction News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That was the case for some firms in this year\u2019s table. Four of the top 10 posted a lower turnover and four recorded a pre-tax loss. McMullen Facades, for instance, tabled a \u00a333.8m drop in its most recent accounts, although this was better than the previous year\u2019s \u00a343.6m deficit. Permasteelisa and FK Group were also in the red at \u00a36.8m and \u00a35.9m respectively.<\/p>\n<p>On average, the top 10 made a loss of \u00a3590,000, although the median pre-tax margin of 3.3 per cent was double last year\u2019s 1.6 per cent. This was generated from an aggregate revenue of \u00a3988.3m, up by 2 per cent on last year\u2019s index. Swift Brickwork and Stanmore each improved their turnover by a quarter or more.<\/p>\n<p>Derbyshire-based Keyclad entered the top 10 for the first time with revenue of \u00a334m and \u00a3800,000 in pre-tax profit.<\/p>\n<p>Manak says some envelope firms have struggled due to delays in Building Safety Regulator (BSR) approvals for higher-risk building plans, with a severe backlog at the gateway two stage. \u201cA lot of those jobs are actually just sitting there, not being started, just because they are going through the BSR,\u201d he says. That leaves facade businesses and sole traders waiting for work to begin.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, Manak says, he will receive calls from sole traders and specialists looking for jobs up until June, but not in July and August, when work is typically at its peak. This year was different. \u201cI still had calls in July and August from people saying that they were available,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factfile\">\n<h3>The top 10 companies in:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-concrete-contractors-01-12-2025\">Concrete<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-demolition-contractors-01-12-2025\/\">Demolition<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-fit-out-contractors-01-12-2025\/\">Fit out<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sections\/news\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-ground-engineering-contractors-01-12-2025\/\">Ground engineering<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-me-contractors-01-12-2025\/\">M&amp;E<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-scaffolding-contractors-01-12-2025\/\">Scaffolding<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn-specialists-index-2025-top-10-steel-contractors-01-12-2025\/\">Steel<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Metal Cladding and Roofing Manufacturers Association director Carlton Jones agrees that the 2022 Building Safety Act has led to some industry difficulties, but he remains upbeat. While acknowledging \u201csome fairly serious insolvencies\u201d among facade firms, including Alucraft, which went under last year, Jones says, \u201cgenerally, the industry is quite buoyant\u201d. He says more envelope specialists are now involved in design work, and that their versatility makes them attractive to main contractors appointed to specialist jobs.<\/p>\n<p>But some smaller contractors still have not \u201cunderstood the Building Safety Act and its implications for the sector\u201d, Jones says, which is why it is one of his organisation\u2019s key areas of focus. He warns that a decision to change fire-resistance tests for firewalls to match European standards has been causing \u201cgrief\u201d within the industry, as it familiarises itself with new technicalities.
