Hinkley Point C has halted lifting work and is checking its safety procedures after an incident involving panels being raised at height by a crane.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred earlier this month, when a panel fell onto scaffolding within an exclusion zone, a spokesperson for the project said.<\/p>\n

They added: \u201cNo one was hurt. Safety is our highest priority at Hinkley Point C. Lifting was paused so we could ensure safe procedures were in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction News<\/em> understands the incident involved one of the site\u2019s tower cranes.<\/p>\n

CN<\/em> contacted the Health and Safety Executive to ascertain whether it had launched an investigation.<\/p>\n

The latest incident came six months after a warning from nuclear safety watchdog the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) over the monitoring and management of tower cranes at the site.<\/p>\n

The ONR served an improvement notice in May<\/a> on EDF Energy subsidiary NNB Generation Company (HPC) Ltd, following the failure of components on one of the cranes.<\/p>\n

The problem was identified by an operator undertaking pre-use checks in February, it said.<\/p>\n

According to the ONR, a pin connecting two mast sections failed while \u201cevidence of cracking\u201d was also found within a mast section.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The issue was identified before there was any broader failure of the crane, so there were no injuries to any workers, the ONR said.<\/p>\n

However, the findings were reported under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).<\/p>\n

Construction work at Hinkley Point C began in 2016.<\/p>\n

The Bylor consortium delivering main civil engineering works includes contractors Bouygues Travaux Publics\u00a0and Laing O’Rourke.<\/p>\n

The nuclear power station was originally expected to cost about \u00a318bn and be operational within a decade.<\/p>\n

But by 2024, lead developer EDF estimated it could cost up to \u00a346bn, with construction work potentially continuing into the 2030s<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
