East West Rail (EWR), the client on the £7bn project, revamped its proposed route map in November with more than 80 design changes, including a new station to serve the planned Universal Studios theme park in Bedfordshire.

The EWR Alliance between Network Rail, AtkinsRéalis, Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail is already collaborating on the Bicester to Bletchley stretch of the line, but other contractors will be keen to grab a slice of the pie. EWR announced a £140m tender for a construction integrator in May. This was followed by market engagement in November on a £700m framework for programme support works, with a tender scheduled for April.

Lower Thames Crossing

After an expensive planning saga, the UK’s largest-ever road tunnel finally got the go-ahead in March.

Balfour Beatty and Skanska are building the northern and southern link roads respectively, while a joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Murphy is taking on the £1.34bn twin-bore tunnel under the river Thames.

The government handed over £590m in last year’s Spending Review to kick things off, and it allocated £891m in the Autumn Budget to complete the publicly funded works by 2029.
