Funds from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) pushed up the number of new entrants into the construction sector by a quarter, according to its annual accounts.<\/p>\n

The CITB said the number of sector entrants in 2024\/25 was up by 27 per cent, exceeding its aim of a 15 per cent increase.<\/p>\n

However, its accounts show its\u00a0full income for the year, of \u00a3280.2m, did not meet its expenditure of \u00a3298.8m.<\/p>\n

It comes as the CITB faced a\u00a0raft of criticism from the industry<\/a> this week after it suspended funding for level 7 qualifications and short courses.<\/p>\n

The sudden move came after the skills body warned that without action, its reserves \u2013 which stand at \u00a378.9m \u2013 would drop to below its minimum reserve level of \u00a350m by March.<\/p>\n

The CITB\u2019s expenditure was up on the \u00a3265.3m it spent the year prior.<\/p>\n

CITB chief executive Tim Balcon (pictured) said the rise in investment was matched by \u201cincreased engagement\u201d which led to more training activity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an increasing demand for construction work in the UK, and employers are aware of the opportunity and the need for training, with 80 per cent of employers indicating they plan to increase their training efforts,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Boosting the number of sector entrants by 15 per cent was one of the CITB\u2019s three key performance indicators (KPIs) for the year.<\/p>\n

It also aimed to increase the number of employers supported to train and upskill by 14 per cent \u2013 its accounts showed this rose by 22 per cent.<\/p>\n

Its third KPI was to increase the number of individuals supported to train and upskill by 13 per cent \u2013 this rose by a fifth.<\/p>\n

Balcon said the CITB provided \u00a3183.2m of grant support to the sector last year, supporting 30,002 apprentices and 20,250 learners on vocational qualifications.<\/p>\n

Balcon said it was \u201cextremely encouraging\u201d that nine in ten of the businesses that received the apprenticeship grant support were small and micro businesses, as more than two thirds of apprenticeship starts are employed by firms with fewer than 50 employees.<\/p>\n

The CITB also committed to investing \u00a337m over the next three years at its National Construction College sites \u2013 in Erith, Bircham Newton and Inchinnan.<\/p>\n

CITB chair Paul Lauener also addressed Mark Farmer\u2019s hard-hitting review of the CITB\u2019s operations, which was published in January.<\/p>\n

In his review, Farmer called for a \u201cfundamental reset\u201d at the CITB<\/a>, and for it to merge with its counterpart, the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).<\/p>\n
