Observers saw it as an opportunity for the firm to capitalise on the government’s 10-year plan to spend £725bn on infrastructure. Chief executive Paul Brown said the acquisition represented a significant opportunity to capitalise on the “growing aviation, energy, water and utility sector markets”.

His company has not inherited a business in the rudest of health: in its latest accounts, Farrans’ profit more than halved to £3.3m and turnover dropped by a quarter to £382.4m. It had been up for sale for three years before previous owner CRH secured a deal.

Sisk, however, turned a £9.7m pre-tax loss in 2023 into a £6m profit in 2024, and has since picked up flagship work like the estimated £149m build of a cancer centre at Great Ormond Street.

Mace

One eye-catching deal last year was Mace’s sale of 75 per cent of its global consulting business to one of the world’s largest investment banks, Goldman Sachs. Mace Consult, which has about 5,200 staff, is now operating as a standalone independent business. However, Mace chair Mark Reynolds and chief executive Jason Millett have each retained minority stakes in Mace Consult and will work with Goldman Sachs.

The consultancy firm appears to have its eye on North America, as its boss, Davendra Dabasia, has talked about “scaling up at pace” on the other side of the Atlantic. Reynolds said the move was about “enabling the next phase of growth” for Mace Consult.

Goldman Sachs will be hoping the purchase proves more successful than its last major investment in a UK built-environment business. The firm’s problems started when build-cost errors were identified at its South division, which led to a string of profit warnings and a management restructure. Its share price fell off a cliff in September 2024 – which caused it to drop out of the FTSE100 – and has yet to recover. However, Vistry has been making more optimistic noises of late and appears well-placed to capitalise on the government’s major backing of affordable housing.

The firm’s pivot towards a “partnership model” in 2023, involving jobs for housing associations, councils and institutional landlords, means it is less reliant on the more volatile private market. But with many large housing associations dialling down their development ambitions in the face of financial challenges, rich rewards are not guaranteed.

Yet with industry veteran Greg Fitzgerald at the helm and a government desperate to hit its 1.5 million new-homes target, the long-term fundamentals would appear strong for Vistry.

Sir Robert McAlpine

Like a number of its tier one counterparts, Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) has endured a bumpy ride in the past few years amid a difficult macroeconomic climate. The Hertfordshire-based group recorded a £102.6m pre-tax loss in its 2022-23 financial year, partly because it was forced to devalue four major contracts.

However, things improved the following year, with accounts for its holding company showing a return to profit, totalling £54.8m. During this time, the group has carried out a major internal overhaul, stepping up its focus on three core sectors and a trimming its board. Chief executive Neil Martin has suggested the shake-up is now bearing fruit.

As well as a boost to the bottom line, the firm’s cash position also improved. Other promising signs have emerged, as SRM topped CN’s monthly contractor league table contractor league table in October for the first time in seven years.
