Civils contractor Alun Griffiths has halved its pre-tax loss amid a rejig to focus on smaller contracts, as it battles soaring costs on large projects.<\/p>\n

The firm tabled a pre-tax loss of \u00a348.9m in the year to 31 December 2024, down from \u00a395m,<\/a> as it continued to combat \u201csignificant loss provisions\u201d relating to four large fixed-price contracts.<\/p>\n

It is the troubled contractor\u2019s sixth annual loss in a row. Turnover was also down to \u00a3195.2m from \u00a3262.7m, while cash slipped from \u00a38.3m to \u00a3351,000.<\/p>\n

Founder Alun Griffiths \u2013 who bought the contractor back from Tarmac in May<\/a> \u2013 blamed the firm\u2019s loss \u201calmost exclusively\u201d on the fixed-price contracts, which the firm signed before the Covid pandemic began in 2020, and before Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Those two events caused \u201cunforeseen economic disruption\u201d for the firm, Griffiths said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese contracts have also been impacted by weather delays, programme changes and supply chain cost escalation, which have had a significant impact on their practical execution,\u201d Griffiths added.<\/p>\n

He said his firm would no longer pursue \u201cmultiple, high-value, discrete projects\u201d like the four onerous jobs, following a business-wide strategic review carried out in 2024. The review focused on possible future market conditions for the business and how they aligned to the firm\u2019s core operational capabilities.<\/p>\n

The review itself lessened the firm\u2019s risk exposure but led to a reduction in turnover, he said.<\/p>\n

Despite that, he said the company\u2019s performance remained \u201cstrong\u201d in 2024, adding that Alun Griffiths had \u201creinforc[ed] the long-term partnership between [it] and its clients through its valuable participation in multi-year framework arrangements\u201d.<\/p>\n

Griffiths estimated that the contracts would be completed in the first three months of 2026, but confirmed \u201csignificant loss provisions\u201d related to those projects.<\/p>\n

In total, Alun Griffiths confirmed provisions of \u00a328.9m in the year, of which \u00a327.4m is for onerous contracts. The rest is for legal proceedings. That is down from \u00a358m in the prior year.<\/p>\n

Griffiths did, however, note a \u201csignificant shift\u201d in the scale of government investment into the water sector, after Ofwat approved \u00a3104bn of expenditure from English and Welsh water companies for 2025 to 2030. In the same year, the National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline alluded to up to \u00a3750bn of expenditure in the next 10-year period.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis contributes to strong medium to long term prospects for the company given the level of investment required in the UK, and the commencement of key infrastructure projects,\u201d Griffiths added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough the company\u2019s participation in procurement frameworks aligned to these clients and investment schemes, it is favourably positioned to secure a sustainable pipeline of projects that are precisely aligned to its experience and capability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alun Griffiths\u2019 auditor, Deloitte, resigned following the sale of the business back to its founder. It is now expecting to appoint south west-based Hazlewoods LLP as its replacement, it said in the accounts.<\/p>\n
