Workers at the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria have launched a fresh wave of strike action over an ongoing pay dispute.<\/p>\n

Employees from subcontractors Altrad, Enigma and Kaefer walked out again today (6 January) for 10 days and further strike action is planned in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

The industrial dispute, led by trade union Unite, began last September<\/a> and has involved multiple trades including electricians, joiners, welders, pipe-fitters, riggers and groundworkers.<\/p>\n

Unite has planned action for its members covered by the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry and the Construction Industry Joint Council agreements.<\/p>\n

A Sellafield spokesperson said: \u201cThe industrial action taking place at Sellafield is the result of a pay dispute between some Unite union members and their employers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the people involved are not employed by Sellafield Ltd this is not a dispute that we can resolve.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur priority, as always, is to maintain the safety and security of the Sellafield site.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have provided guidance to our employees who may be impacted in travelling to the site during the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will also continue to support Cumbria Police as they work to minimise the impact of the action on the local road network.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sellafield said its workplaces remain open and stressed that normal working patterns should continue.<\/p>\n

Cumbria Police have stipulated that marches must not start before 7am and must conclude by 10am.<\/p>\n

In December, seven subcontractors temporarily laid off staff<\/a> at the site blaming the effect of ongoing industrial action.<\/p>\n

Unite said it remains committed to resolving the dispute and is calling on employers to enter into discussions with \u201ccredible solutions\u201d that recognise the unique hazards and skillset required at Sellafield.<\/p>\n
