The Building Safety Regulator will turn its focus to driving down the number of live cases relating to remediating unsafe buildings in 2026, the body\u2019s chief executive has told Construction News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Despite the strides made on clearing new-build applications, the volume of live cladding remediation cases has remained stubbornly at around 280 live cases.<\/p>\n

Charlie Pugsley told CN<\/em> that reducing that number would be a priority in the first half of this year.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWe\u2019re going to have a particular focus on that area because there are many people who live in these homes whose lives are blighted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think certainly in terms of for [chair Andy Roe] and myself, the challenges with the [new-build] gateway when we first came in was particularly profound. So that\u2019s why a lot of the focus has been on that. It\u2019s not about remediation not being equally as important.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve met with the residents of the Spectrum building in Dagenham. I spent a year at Grenfell on supporting the fire investigation on scene. So I\u2019m very, very focused in terms of the impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the BSR was working methodically through the different issues facing its workload.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s recognising that there are multiple areas, because it is a hugely complicated space, and we will be working around them. Because you could, for example, come in and say, \u2018let\u2019s try and fix everything at once\u2019. But then arguably, you\u2019re in slightly at danger of doing everything not very well rather than making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pugsley said that the remediation figure was not as it might look. \u201cRemediation has more or less been one in, one out, because there\u2019s a lot of volume coming through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The latest data from the BSR showed that 82 decisions on remediation applications were made between September and December, while 83 new projects were submitted.<\/p>\n

More than half the open cases (153) are in the London region.<\/p>\n

An update released by the BSR earlier this month said that several remediation cases were being batched and dealt with together at the same time, to speed up decision-making.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, Pugsley explained the changes in process made to the BSR that mean it is firmly on track to meet its target of clearing legacy new-build gateway two applications by the end of January.<\/p>\n

The former fire chief also hit back against scepticism voiced by some in the sector<\/a> upon his appointment.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople said \u2018Oh, here comes a firefighter,\u2019 thinking that I\u2019m somebody who just squirted water. But in the old role, I was responsible for all of London\u2019s fire-safety regulation, health and safety portfolio and operational policy. So I am not without some experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
