{"id":536301,"date":"2026-01-19T12:45:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T12:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=536301"},"modified":"2026-01-19T12:45:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T12:45:49","slug":"hs2-revives-euston-spoil-by-rail-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/hs2-revives-euston-spoil-by-rail-plan-19-01-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 revives Euston spoil-by-rail plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Euston Station delivery teams have been given the go-ahead to transport construction spoil from the site by rail instead of road in future, it has been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>HS2 sparked anger from MPs and the public in 2022 when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/hs2\/dft-revised-plans-for-hs2s-euston-terminus-behind-spoil-u-turn-26-05-2022\/\">abandoned a plan to remove spoil from the site by rail, instead moving it by road.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That decision came after the government ordered the downsizing of the high-speed rail station to 10 platforms. It has since been further reduced to six.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, an HS2 spokesperson told <em>Construction News<\/em> this week that the government has approved plans to move spoil materials by rail again when work resumes.<\/p>\n<p>She confirmed the plan after meeting minutes of the Euston Partnership Board details how the body intends to revise the original plan for removing construction material by rail.<\/p>\n<p>Newly released minutes from the board\u2019s May 2025 discussions show that HS2 manager Nick Jones hoped a two-phase strategy for transporting the construction spoil could be established.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase would use existing rail track, with a second phase put into operation after a new railhead is installed and significant enabling works are carried out at Euston\u2019s platform 16.<\/p>\n<p>The second phase would require funding and a business case to be drawn up, the meeting heard.<\/p>\n<p>HS2 told a Treasury official that it would need approval by the end of this financial year for the first phase. The government has since approved the phase, the HS2 spokesperson confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, a representative from Camden Council called for the work to be integrated into wider design-planning activities for the station.<\/p>\n<p>He also \u201chighlighted the need to remove as many HGV lorries from local roads as possible and asked that the business case captured the community and environmental value of doing so\u201d, the minutes state.<\/p>\n<p>National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority director of infrastructure Stephen Dance said the sequencing of construction activities needs to be understood at \u201can early opportunity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Euston Partnership Board brings together representatives of HS2, Network Rail, the Department for Transport, Greater London Authority, Camden Council, West Coast Partnership and Euston master-developer Lendlease to discuss issues involved in the project.<\/p>\n<p>A new Euston Delivery Company is being set up to oversee private finance and development proposals for the station. It kicked off market engagement with potential new design and engineering partners in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.find-tender.service.gov.uk\/Notice\/066382-2025\">October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How the station will be funded has not yet been determined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Euston Station delivery teams have been given the go-ahead to transport construction spoil from the site by rail instead of road in future, it has been confirmed.
