Growth was evident across both major projects (valued at \u00a3100m or more) and underlying projects (under \u00a3100m). Main contract awards also increased year on year. In contrast, detailed planning approvals declined compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Community &amp; Amenity project-starts, main contract awards and planning approvals all performed strongly during the three months to December. Starts and approvals experienced triple-digit growth, 213 per cent and 345 per cent respectively. Main contract awards rose 34 per cent during the period.<\/p>\n<h3>2026 outlook<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Project starts forecast to decline by 16 per cent in 2026<\/li>\n<li>The \u00a3100m Eltham Library development in Greenwich is set to start this year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Types of projects started<\/h3>\n<p>Reflecting the overall growth in the sector, most sub-sectors saw an increase in project starts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prisons accounted for the largest share (55 per cent), thanks to a 137 per cent growth to total \u00a32.518bn<\/li>\n<li>Local facilities increased 37 per cent on a year ago, totalling \u00a3787m<\/li>\n<li>Government buildings totalled \u00a3677m, 117 per cent up year-on-year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Regional<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In line with the overall growth in the sector, project starts were up year-on-year in most regions<\/li>\n<li>Detailed planning approvals had a weak performance in most regions<\/li>\n<li>Strong growth in both starts and approvals in Scotland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scotland was the most active region for project starts, totalling \u00a3946m, almost triple the previous year\u2019s figure. The East Midlands followed closely at \u00a3941m, representing a more than tenfold increase on 2024. Project starts in London also rose sharply, increasing 439 per cent year on year to \u00a3681m and accounting for a 15 per cent share of the total.<\/p>\n<p>In detailed planning approvals, the South East led the way, accounting for 32 per cent of the total after a 19 per cent year-on-year increase to \u00a3429m. Scotland also recorded growth, rising 40 per cent compared with a year ago to \u00a3177m and representing a 13 per cent share.
