A major Mace job in London is being targetted with industrial action by Wolffkran tower crane operators.<\/p>\n

Nearly 100 tower crane operators voted to strike earlier this month<\/a> following a dispute over pay and conditions.<\/p>\n

Construction News <\/em>can reveal that striking workers represented by Unite the Union are today (27 January) targeting Mace\u2019s \u00a3300m refurb job at 1 Victoria Street<\/a> in Westminster, which it is delivering for Mitsubishi Estate.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Mace said that site operations are \u201cunaffected\u201d by the strike, and that the issues raised are a \u201cmatter between [the striking workers], their employer and their union representatives\u201d.<\/p>\n

Wolffkran acknowledged that the strike has affected the project, but said it had already suspended most onsite lifts due to high winds.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the firm also claimed it has increased tower crane operator pay by 38 per cent since 2015, and offered a further \u201csignificant increase\u201d last August which was turned down.<\/p>\n

The strike is the first of a batch of fortnightly walk-outs organised by Unite, after union sources said Wolffkran offered pay increases in 2024 and 2025 that were \u201cnot acceptable\u201d. It is not clear how long the strikes will go on for.<\/p>\n

The workers are also walking out over Wolffkran\u2019s latest employment policies, including a reduction in standby payments paid to contractors on call outside of their working hours.<\/p>\n

CN <\/em>also understands that a single tower crane operator is striking today from Deconstruct UK\u2019s demolition project at Grenfell Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wolffkran\u2019s cranes are currently being used on at least 89 sites across the UK, with a total main contract value of more than \u00a311bn, according to construction data provider\u00a0Glenigan.<\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said earlier this month it was \u201ccompletely unacceptable\u201d that the workers had not received a proper pay rise in two years, and that Wolffkran was \u201cattacking workers\u2019 conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Mace confirmed that the Victoria Street site is operating as normal, adding: \u201cWe are aware of a demonstration taking place outside our 1 Victoria Street site, involving crane operatives employed by one of our subcontractors.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs these individuals are not employed by Mace, the issues raised are a matter between them, their employer and their union representatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe safety and operation of the site are unaffected.\u201d<\/p>\n

They said they had been able to implement their standard procedures to maintain safe access for workers, the public and emergency vehicles, \u201cthanks to our positive working relationship with Unite the Union\u201d.<\/p>\n
