Elsewhere, detailed planning approvals declined on the preceding three months and previous year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>North East overview<\/h3>\n<p>Adding up to \u00a3809m, work starting on-site in the North East during the three months to December declined 24 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 103 per cent up on a year ago. Major projects (\u00a3100m or more in value) totalled \u00a3274m during the period, a 37 per cent rise against the preceding three months to stand up on the previous year where no major projects commenced on-site. Underlying project-starts (less than \u00a3100m) rose 10 per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis to stand 10 per cent up compared with a year ago. When not seasonally adjusted starts declined 39 per cent against the preceding three months.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards in the North East increased 78 per cent during the three months and fell 1 per cent against the previous year to total \u00a31.02bn. No major projects were present during the period, a decline against the preceding three months and previous year. \u00a0Underlying contract awards rose 72 per cent (SA) on the preceding three months and rose 22 per cent against the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Totalling \u00a3247m, detailed planning approvals declined 81 per cent against the preceding three months to stand 67 per cent down compared with the previous year. No major projects were present during the period, a decline against the preceding three months but unchanged against the previous year. Underlying approvals declined 72 per cent on the preceding three months (SA) and declined 67 per cent against the previous year.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Social Housing accounted for 37 per cent of work starting on-site in the North East during the three months to December with the value adding up to \u00a3300m, making it the most active sector. The sector experienced a 372 per cent increase against a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Education at \u00a396m, accountesd for 12% of the total value, having increased 487 per cent against last year\u2019s levels, accounting for the third largest share of sector starts. Elsewhere, totalling \u00a3117m private housing didn\u2019t fare as well. The sector experienced a 69 per cent decline against the previous year to total \u00a3130m.<\/p>\n<p>Education accounted for one tenth of the total value, with the sector declining 62 per cent against the previous year to total \u00a324m.
