More positively, project-starts rose sharply against the preceding three months.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>East of England overview<\/h3>\n<p>The total value of project starts in the East of England was \u00a35.79bn, 214 per cent up against the previous three months and 44 per cent lower than last year. Underlying projects (less than \u00a3100m) starting on site declined 20 per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis to stand 30 per cent lower than a year ago. Major projects (\u00a3100m or more in value) totalled \u00a34.55bn, an increase on the preceding three months where no major projects commenced, but 46 per cent down against the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Totalling \u00a33.18bn, main contract awards declined 25 per cent against the previous three months to stand 5 per cent down on the previous year. Major projects totalled \u00a31.53bn, down 41 per cent against the preceding three months but up 18 per cent against the previous year. Underlying contract awards experienced a decline of 12 per cent against the preceding three months (SA) and a decline of 20 per cent against last year.<\/p>\n<p>Detailed planning approvals, at \u00a32.16bn, declined 30 per cent during the three months to December to stand 26 per cent down against last year. Major approvals declined 61 per cent against the preceding three months but rose 91 per cent on a year ago, totalling \u00a3725m. Underlying planning approvals, adding up to \u00a31.44bn, declined 7 per cent against the previous three months (SA) and declined 44 per cent against last year\u2019s figures.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Totalling \u00a33.92bn, infrastructure accounted for 68 per cent of starts during the three months to December, making it the most active sector with the value having increased 16 times against the previous year.
