Totalling \u00a31.05bn major projects (\u00a3100m or more in value) starting on site grew more than seven times from the previous quarter and grew from last year when no major projects started. Underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m) increased 22 per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis but stood six per cent down against last year to total \u00a3953m.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards in the East Midlands grew 73 per cent during the three months and decreased 22 per cent against the previous year to total \u00a31.75bn. Major contract awards grew against the previous three months when no major contracts were awarded, and stood 40 per cent down on a year ago to total \u00a3354m. At \u00a31.39bn underlying contract awards grew 22 per cent (SA) against the previous period but stood 16 per cent lower than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Totalling \u00a31.45bn, detailed planning approvals increased 29 per cent against the preceding three months but fell 27 per cent compared with last year. Major approvals totalled \u00a3715m, more than five times higher than the previous quarter, and 42 per cent up on a year ago. Underlying detailed approvals fell 22 per cent (SA) against the preceding three months to stand 50 per cent lower than last year, totalling \u00a3749m.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Community &amp; amenity accounted for 37 per cent of all work starting in the region with the value adding up to \u00a3748m. The sector experienced a strong period, with the value of starts having jumped nearly 720 times against the previous year. Social Housing projects worth \u00a3297m grew 342 per cent against the previous year to account for a 15 per cent share of the total value.<\/p>\n<p>Accounting for an eight per cent share at \u00a3163m, Industrial grew 70 per cent on a year ago. In contrast, private housing experienced a weak period during the three months to December. Totalling \u00a3253m, utilities also performed well, with the sector having grown nearly six times from a year ago to account for a 17 per cent share of the total value.<\/p>\n<p>Accounting for a 16 per cent share, social housing were another sector to experience growth during the period. The sector grew 53 per cent compared with a year ago to total \u00a3232m.
