More positively, project starts grew on a year ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>London overview<\/h3>\n<p>Totalling \u00a33.5bn, work starting in London during the three months to December fell 31 per cent against the preceding quarter to stand one per cent up on a year ago. At \u00a31.4bn, major work (\u00a3100m or more) starting on site decreased 54 per cent against the preceding quarter and fell 25 per cent compared with last year\u2019s levels. Underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m in value) grew 35 per cent quarter-on-quarter on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis and increased 33 per cent on the previous year to total \u00a32.1bn.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a32.38bn, main contract awards in London fell 62 per cent during the quarter and were 43 per cent lower than the previous year. Underlying contract awards totalled \u00a31.35bn, 21 per cent down against the previous quarter (SA) and 26 per cent lower than a year ago. Major project contract awards reached \u00a31.03bn, a 77 per cent decrease from the previous quarter and 56 per cent down compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Detailed planning approvals in London increased 138 per cent against the preceding quarter and fell 27 per cent on the previous year to total \u00a34.89bn. Major project approvals, at \u00a33.5bn, tripled on the preceding quarter to stand 12 per cent down against a year ago. Underlying project approvals climbed three per cent (SA) against the preceding quarter and were 49 per cent down against the previous year to total \u00a31.39bn.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing accounted for 45 per cent of the value of work starting in London during the three months to December, with the value of work adding up to \u00a31.57bn, making it the most active sector, thanks to the value having jumped 114 per cent compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Accounting for an eight per cent share, community &amp; amenity starts also experienced a strong period, having increased 13 times against the previous year to total \u00a3292m. In contrast, accounting for a 24 per cent share, offices fell three per cent on a year ago to total \u00a3830m. The sector totalled \u00a33.03bn, having doubled on a year ago. In contrast, accounting for 21 per cent, private housing experienced a weak period, with the value of approvals having slipped back 70 per cent on the previous year to total \u00a31.01bn.<\/p>\n<p>Accounting for a six per cent share at \u00a3275m, social housing faced a 72 per cent decline. Totalling \u00a3223m, hotel &amp; leisure also experienced a slump.
