More positively, main contract awards grew on both periods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>South East overview<\/h3>\n<p>Totalling \u00a32.02bn, work commencing on site in the South East during the three months to December fell 37 per cent against the preceding quarter to stand 30 per cent down against the previous year. Major project starts (\u00a3100m or more) decreased 65 per cent against the preceding quarter to stand 64 per cent down on the previous year to total \u00a3332m. Totalling \u00a31.69bn, underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m in value) decreased seven per cent against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis to stand 14 per cent lower than last year.<\/p>\n<p>Adding up to \u00a34.36bn, main contract awards in the South East jumped 90 per cent quarter-on-quarter to stand 25 per cent higher than a year ago. Major contract awards, at \u00a32.54bn, increased 663 per cent against the previous three months to stand 649 per cent up against last year\u2019s levels. Underlying contract awards slipped back 16 per cent (SA) against the preceding quarter and were 43 per cent down on the previous year to total \u00a31.82bn.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a33.73bn, detailed planning approvals in the South East fell four per cent from the preceding quarter to stand 15 per cent lower against the previous year. Major project approvals, totalling \u00a31.47bn, slipped back six per cent on the preceding quarter to stand 148 per cent up against the previous year. Totalling \u00a32.26bn, underlying approvals decreased 17 per cent (SA) against the preceding quarter to stand 40 per cent lower against the same period a year ago.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing accounted for the greatest share (28 per cent) of starts in the South East during the three months to December with the value adding up to \u00a3556m, despite the value having fallen 39 per cent against last year\u2019s levels. At \u00a3285m, infrastructure also performed poorly, having declined 61 per cent in value to account for 14 per cent of starts in the region.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, totalling \u00a3376m, industrial grew 99 per cent on a year ago to account for a 19 per cent share of the region. The value fell 42 per cent against the previous year to total \u00a31.23bn. In contrast, totalling \u00a3776m, offices experienced a strong period, having tripled on a year ago to account for 21 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities accounted for a ten per cent share at \u00a3390m, a 70 per cent growth against last year. Accounting for a nine per cent share, community &amp; amenity also jumped 77 per cent on a year ago.
