More positively, main contract awards grew on the previous three months.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>South West overview<\/h3>\n<p>Work commencing on site in the South West added up to \u00a31.33bn during the three months to December, having decreased 12 per cent compared with the preceding quarter and 11 per cent down year-on-year. Major projects (over \u00a3100m in value) starting on site totalled \u00a3115m, 38 per cent down against the previous quarter and 42 per cent lower than a year ago. Underlying project starts (less than \u00a3100m) increased 20 per cent against the preceding quarter on a seasonally adjusted (SA) basis but fell six per cent against the previous year to total \u00a31.21bn.<\/p>\n<p>Main contract awards increased 19 per cent against the preceding quarter to stand 16 per cent down on the previous year, totalling \u00a31.82bn. Major project contract awards totalled \u00a3451m during the period, having doubled on the preceding quarter to stand 21 per cent up on the previous year. Underlying contract awards climbed seven per cent against the previous quarter (SA) to stand 24 per cent down on last year\u2019s levels, totalling \u00a31.37bn.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a31.98bn, detailed planning approvals decreased seven per cent against the preceding quarter to stand 20 per cent down year-on-year. Major approvals totalled \u00a3168m, having declined 74 per cent against the preceding quarter and standing 57 per cent lower compared to last year. Underlying detailed planning approvals grew two per cent (SA) from the preceding quarter and fell 13 per cent against a year ago to total \u00a31.81bn.<\/p>\n<h3>Sector analysis: project starts<\/h3>\n<p>Private housing climbed two per cent against the preceding year and accounted for the greatest share (43 per cent) of starts in the region, totalling \u00a3566m. Social housing also experienced a strong period, having grown 39 per cent on a year ago to total \u00a3243m, an 18 per cent share of project starts in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities jumped 131 per cent on a year ago to total \u00a3177m, accounting for 13 per cent of starts in the region. Private housing project approvals fell nine per cent against the previous year to total \u00a31.02bn. Totalling \u00a3172m,industrial was 61 per cent down compared with the previous year, accounting for nine per cent of approvals in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities, on the other hand, experienced a strong period, having increased 116 per cent to account for 19 per cent at \u00a3381m.
