Building Safety Regulator (BSR) chairman Andy Roe has played down the prospects of his body taking a hardline approach on legacy gateway two applications.<\/p>\n

The BSR said in a document released\u00a0 on Tuesday (27 January) that it would reject projects stuck in the gateway if \u201cachieving an approval within the next one to two months is unlikely\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, speaking at a press briefing this morning, Roe (pictured) told Construction News<\/em> there would \u201cnot be a hard stop\u201d on rejecting gateway two applications.<\/p>\n

Roe said the BSR has a \u201cresponsibility, as far as is reasonable, to get those applications across the line because our system wasn’t working properly\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, he said: \u201cIf we simply can’t agree on a matter of principle, design or safety, we’ll have to call a halt to it, obviously,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The BSR committed in October to clearing the gateway two backlog by January<\/a>, after it had faced issues surrounding staff availability, complexity and \u201cinformation needs from [the] applicant or BSR\u201d.<\/p>\n

In its latest progress report, the BSR said it had reduced its caseload of legacy applications to the gateway from 81 at the start of November to 29.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe approval rate of these older cases continues to be high at 87 per cent as we strive to do all we can to achieve successful outcomes,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

But it said the leftover cases were using up \u201csignificant BSR resources\u201d and it was assessing whether they were likely to complete the remaining cases in the next two months.<\/p>\n

\u201c[If] the information gap that remains means that achieving an approval within the next one to two months is unlikely [\u2026] then those cases will be rejected,\u201d the BSR said.<\/p>\n

The BSR also confirmed plans to bring forward a Remediation Improvement Plan in a bid to drive down live cases relating to remediating unsafe buildings in 2026, as revealed by\u00a0CN\u00a0<\/em>earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n
