{"id":537068,"date":"2026-01-29T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=537068"},"modified":"2026-01-28T17:25:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:25:24","slug":"theft-from-balfour-subbie-leads-police-to-2m-stolen-tool-trove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/legal\/theft-from-balfour-subbie-leads-police-to-2m-stolen-tool-trove-29-01-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Theft from Balfour subbie leads police to \u00a32m stolen tool trove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-teams=\"true\">Police have uncovered nearly \u00a32m of stolen construction equipment after they tracked tools stolen from Balfour Beatty subcontractors building access roads to the Lower Thames Crossing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police announced yesterday (28 January) that officers had raided a property in Ilford and discovered the huge stash \u2013 the equivalent of 10 lorry loads.<\/p>\n<p><em>Construction News<\/em> understands that police were led to the address using tracking technology fitted to tools owned by subcontractors working on Balfour Beatty\u2019s job to build approach roads north of the crossing.<\/p>\n<p>Inspector Mark Connolly, from the Met\u2019s local policing team in east London, said: \u201cThis is one of the largest recoveries of stolen tools we\u2019ve ever made, and it sends a clear message that we will identify offenders and bring them to justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur teams are working with partners across construction, retail and logistics to disrupt the organised networks that profit from these offences, and to return stolen tools to their rightful owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two suspects were arrested at the scene on 14 January. A third suspect was detained at a separate address, where further stolen items were recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Images released by the Met show pallets of branded power tools, saws, compressors and surveying kits recovered from the east London site, many sealed in bags.<\/p>\n<p>Brands identified include Hilti, Milwaukee, Makita and Paslode, with equipment ranging from table saws to nail guns and industrial blowers.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe the group had been operating an organised criminal enterprise, reselling the stolen tools online and distributing them across the UK and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The recovered tools have been transferred to a secure police premises, where officers are working to identify the items and trace their rightful owners.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the equipment is believed to be linked to thefts dating back as far as 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Connolly said: \u201cOur message to tradespeople is to mark your items with synthetic DNA to make it easier to forensically link items and register the serial number with the manufacturer and the UK National Property Register.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"miso-ask-combo__section miso-ask-combo__answer\">\n<div class=\"miso-typewriter miso-markdown\" data-role=\"answer\" data-format=\"markdown\" data-status=\"ready\">\n<p>Balfour Beatty was officially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/balfour-beats-kier-jv-to-1-2bn-lower-thames-crossing-contract-23-01-2023\/\">awarded the \u00a31.2bn contrac<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/balfour-beats-kier-jv-to-1-2bn-lower-thames-crossing-contract-23-01-2023\/\">t<\/a> for the Lower Thames Crossing \u2018Roads North of the Thames\u2019 package in January 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The contract involves a two-stage design-and-build project to deliver approximately 10 miles of new road connecting the tunnel to the existing network, including the M25, A13 and A1089.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police have uncovered nearly \u00a32m of stolen construction equipment after they tracked tools stolen from Balfour Beatty subcontractors building access roads to the Lower Thames Crossing.
